There was no hunting for me last night. Went shopping with the little lady. Brother did go, it was raining again with some decent fog. He took Sonic. Brother said Sonic didn't hunt out real good last night. He got wet enough and loaded up Sonic and called it a night. Sonic has been looking good, but I expect these types of nights in that kind of weather with a 7 month old pup. We will give him another spin later on in the week.

12-21-11 hunt

Brother came over for a hunt . I took Penny and brother took his Zeke pup. First drop Penny gets in 400 yds on a good working track and trees. It's a "leaner" that goes into a den. She is on the other side of a deep creek. We head back to the truck and drive around to get her. We load up and move. Second drop, Penny gets in the timber and follows the creek in at 3/4 mile and gets treed. We are able to drive around. We get to her and it's a tree that is covered with vines. We look the tree over good and can't find the coon. The coon picked a good tree to hang a dog up on.
We head to the truck and to our next hunting spot. Third drop spot is a small section out in the middle of a lot of farm ground. I get Penny out on the tailgate and tell her she needs to slow down a little and hunt this patch out instead of going right through it. We cut them, after a bit I check the Garmin to see how she is hunting. She did slow down a little, she was only 250 yds in. I checked it just moments later and she was 650 yds, which I figured was out to edge of the timber. Garmin shows her cutting back in to the timber and moving on through the timber. She strikes and trees shortly after. The Garmin showed that she was hunting at an average of 5 MPH. in this section. We go to her tree its a smaller tree that goes up into a big Hickory tree with the top blown over on it. As we are walking into the tree we both think we see the coon right where the top is broke over. We talk it over and figure it is a limb off the hickory. We search the tree good and I get back over where we thought we seen the coon, I called my brother back over there for another look. I think it's the coon. He shoots up there 3 or 4 times a little to the right and nothing. I said it looks like you need to go a little to the left. I was thinking after those 4 shots its nothing but a branch or knot up there. We aims a little to the left and here comes a big upset boar coon that comes down that smaller tree Penny is on. He is heading right for her and she is watching him come at her. He stalls out on a limb. We bring him on down and he does a number on Penny but she just keeps going for more, I finally have to pull her off for her own good. The brothers male pup also got a number put on him. Below are some pictures of tonight's hunt.

12-26-11 hunt

Brother came over with his black male pup"Zeke". I took Zeus. First drop Zeus gets in about 80 yds and trees. It is a big Oak tree. We shine it but can't find the coon. He may have missed. We lead off that tree aways and cut them again. Zeus gets in another 100 yds and trees again. We shine the tree, we thought he may have missed, but brother found the coon low in the tree. I get my camera out for pictures and realize I have left the SD card at home in the computer. I tell my brother we have to go back to the house and get the SD card. My camera has become a very important part to my coonhunting and I don't feel right out there without it. I get the SD card loaded in the camera and pickup a couple brownies while in the house. We move on, it starts to raining when we get to our next hunting spot. Zeus hits a bad track along the creek at 300 yds in. We move in closer. Track fizzles out. Zeus gets in the big timber hits a track and runs it in at 800 yrds to the creek and continues to run it along the creek which loops back to us. Zeus trees he is 350 yds from us, we head into him. We shine, but it looks like he has missed. We lead off and cut them. He moves a couple hundred yds and trees. Zeus has the meat, at least 2 coons seen in this tree. Brothers pup gets up and trees with him some on this tree. We head to the truck. Below is a few pics of Zeus during last night's hunt.

12-27-11 hunt

We started hunting late last night it was after 10:00 before we turned loose. I took Zeus and brother handled Sonic. We stayed in one large creek bottom for our hunt. We walk them in aways, point them in the desired direction and cut them. Sonic gets struck quick hits a tree, Zeus doesn't like it and he moves on. Sonic checks and moves on. They get in another 200 yds and tree. Its a large oak. We shine but can't find it. We cut them from that tree. Sonic strikes, then Zeus. They get in 500 yds from us. Zeus trees, Sonic still running track. We get to Zeus, he has a den tree, but the coon is on the outside. Sonic comes into the tree we tie him back. We lead off this tree and head deep into the creek bottom. We cut them. They grab a slick tree. I let Zeus know it's slick. We cut them. The get treed on a den. We lead off and cut them again. They get 200 yds from us and strike and tree for a short time, then shut up. I check on the Garmin it showing that they are not moving, but they aren't barking either. So, we head to them. They caught themselves a "greaser". I could tell Zeus knew he made a mistake, but just couldn't resist. So, this leads to a educating moment for Zeus. We lead away and cut them they make another den. We cut them loose off that tree they get in deep Zeus falls treed on the edge of the creek, Sonic backs him. Its a den, with 2 on the outside. We bring the coon down, he lands and rolls down the creek bank. Coons in the water waiting for a fight. Zeus gets after him. Coon backs Zeus off and starts swimming the creek. Zeus goes in after him. Coon gets on Zeus' head, and Zeus slowly starts going down. Zeus gets away. In the mean time we had Sonic tied to a sapling up by the tree. In Sonic's excitement he breaks the sapling off and heads for the swimming coon with 5 foot of lead and 4 foot of sapling attached to it. This ain't good. We tried to catch Sonic before he hit the water but missed him. Sonic catches the coon in the water, but then all of a sudden it looks like the coon has caught Sonic. Like I said it ain't good from were I'm at. So, I head in after them. I was afraid they were going to drown and at times it certainly look that way.Now there is 2 dogs, a boar coon, and me in a slick bottom, flowing creek that takes my feet out from me and I'm neck deep dog paddling to the bank. I grab a root in the bank to keep me from getting sucked back out to the middle of the creek. The dogs are next to me on the bank with the coon. Zeus and Sonic now have things under control. I hand my brother the sapling that is still attached to Sonic and his lead and brother pulls Sonic up and out of the creek. I am able to get myself pulled up on a leaning tree growing out the side of the creek. I get Zeus on the lead and hand it to my brother. He pulls Zeus up and out while Zeus pulls the coon up and out of the creek. I take a few minutes to catch my breath. I get up and out and back on the high ground. By this time I realize my camera, Garmin, Cell Phone, Keyless remote starter and my underwear is soaked, not to mention 2 boots full of water. I guess when you go neck deep in a creek this should be expected. It was 32 degrees out. We are at least 3/4 of a mile from the truck. We head for the truck. I told my brother we better call it a night and head home. Here are a few pics of Zeus treed with the meat. I'm sorry I didn't get any pictures of the action in the creek. I was too busy trying to keep my head above water. Wow, what a night.

12-28-11 hunt

Brother came over for a short hunt tonight. I took Zeus and he brought his male pup Zeke. We get to our hunting spot and cut them. Zeus gets in 150 yds to the east then breaks to the south. Zeus gets treed 600 yds in. Zeus had to cross multiple fences and track through some thick stuff to get treed where he was at. We get to Zeus, he has the meat. It is at least a 25lb boar coon. I was proud of him, I thought he did a good job. We head back to the truck and call it a night. Below is a picture of Zeus treed, with the meat.

No hunting for me last night. Was tired from the trip to Kentucky. Brother and I headed down there to pick. his Raven female up. Then stopped off at a "buffet" on our way back. I 'll put it this way, I caught the "buffet flu". So, I really wasn't in the shape I needed to be in when you have several layers of clothes on and an emergency situation hits you. It was best to stay home.

Dave,
It looks like the temp may drop some with some chances of showers. But I don't think its going to be too bad here. I'll keep watching the weather. The forecast changes around here pretty quick sometimes. Sorry, I have missed your call. Try me again this evening, when you get the chance.

12-31-11 HUNT

Brother came over for a short hunt last night. I took Zeus and he had his Zeb pup. First drop, Zeus hits a tree 200 yds in, he moves on and hunts through to the next road without a bark. We load up and move. Second drop, we cut loose. Zeus hunts this section out without a bark. We get him on the lead and move. Third drop Zeus and Zeb hit a track. Zeus moved it well, I thought and opened just right on it. Zeus trees. We go to him it is a den. We lead off that tree and cut loose. He hunts the section well, but not a bark. We put them on the lead and head for home to watch the "ball drop". Below is couple pics of last nights hunt.

YES, Zeus tends to get a bit foamed up at times. Still young with some learning to do. I'm pleased with his progress so far.

davemc,
The weather is looking good for the time frame you were talking about coming. Make sure you bring an extra empty dog box. I'm sure we can get it filled up before you have to go back home.

01-03-12 HUNT

Brother and I went hunting last night. Brother made a drop by himself with his Raven female before he picked me up. Raven treed on a den. We get to our first hunting spot, its a spot that's not been hunted yet this year. Its a patch of timber way out in the middle of crop fields. It's 26 degrees with a little dusting of snow on the ground. On our way back to the woods we see a dozen or more deer in the fields they head for the woods we are going to hunt. Brother is hunting RAVEN, and I took ZEUS and BASH. We cut them. Raven gets struck, Zeus falls treed and starts hammering straight in front of us 200 yds in. Raven is left handed of Zeus. Raven Trees, Bash is with Raven. I head to Zeus, brother heads to Raven and ties Bash up for me at Ravens tree. Bash starts treeing some while he is tied back. I get to Zeus's tree he has the meat. Its a den tree but the coon is just outside the hole. Raven has her coon, it's a den tree with the coon looking out of the hole. They are split treed 100yds apart. Zeus and Raven both did a good job. We load up and move. Next drop, they go the opposite direction we want them to go and end up a couple hundred yds behind the only house in the hundreds and hundreds on acres we are hunting. Garmin shows they are not moving. We head to them. They have found them a snack, a dead deer. I educate my 2 hounds about what time dinner is served and it wasn't then. We load up and move. Next drop, Zeus gets in 200yds and comes treed. I can see Raven and Bash going right handed just before Zeus trees. They end up going to Zeus. They shut up and we head to them. They have a greaser stretched out on the ground. Zeus sees me coming, and his memory comes back to him , knowing he has been through this class before. So, he tries to belly crawl out of there. I catch him and we have a refresher course . Bash gets a switch across the rear and leaves it alone. Brother runs Raven through his version of the same course. We send them on from there. Zeus goes east, Raven goes west. Raven hits a track to the west just before Zeus trees 800yds from us to the east. Raven gets treed to the west. Zeus and Raven are split treed a mile apart. We head to Raven first because she is close to a road. We get to her, she is treed on a den, but we see the coon in the hole. We load her up and head back towards Zeus. Zeus has been treed for over 50 mins. by the time we get to him. He is treed on another dang den treed, but I see the coon balled up in the hole. We were very lucky in being able to see the coons in all the den trees we made last night, that doesn't happen very often. Below are a couple pics of Zeus on the 2 dens he made last night, with coons being seen.

ZEUS ON FIRST DEN, SPLIT 100YDS, COON SEEN

ZEUS ON 2ND DEN, SPLIT 1 MILE, COON SEEN

davemc:
Dave, I will be here waiting on you. Weather should be pretty good while your here. It should be a good time. Give me a call when you can. Have a safe drive.

01-04-12 HUNT

Brother came over for a hunt last night. We took my Sonic pup out by himself last night. First drop, Sonic goes a short distance hits a tree, but moves on right away. He throws about 4 track barks as he moves 150 Yds, then locates and starts hammering. We get to him, he is treed on a large den. We lead out aways and cut him back loose. He hunts out the spot I sent him in, with no bark. I get the lead on him and we move. Next drop, Sonic hits a track and moves it on in the timber, hits a tree, but is not convinced, he moves on. He ends up treeing on a den. We lead off and cut loose. Sonic hunts the tree line to the road without getting treed. We get him on the lead and go switch dogs.

We switch dogs. Brother has Raven and I have my Bash pup. First drop, Bash has his head in the air wanting to go left handed badly. We lead on aways the cut them down a lane. Bash cuts quickly to the left and back behind us. Raven does the same thing but she was a little further down. Raven strikes and runs a good track to the south. They get in there 300yds and track slows. I did here Bash on track. Then "BAM" both dogs hit a tree and start hammering on it. We get to them, and I was proud to see my pup Bash up on the side of the tree treeing hard and serious. Its a den, but brother says here's the coon. We see the coon but he is in the hole. I give Bash a pat on the head, and tell him good job.
We lead off aways and cut back in. They loop back around behind us. Raven ends up treed in a barn out by the road. I catch Bash on his way back through. We call it a night and head home. Below are some pictures of last nights hunt.

01-05-12 , 01-06-12 , 01-07-12 hunt

My good friend Dave McGinnis came down from NY to hunt with me and my brother for a few nights. I was hoping to show him a lot of coon while he was here. First night, Dave had Dual CH High Performance GI JOE, Brother had Raven, and another guy had a 8 month old blue female. I didn't hunt anything of my own the first night. Dave's Joe dog gets a part of a den on the first drop. Brothers dog Raven gets a part of the den, and trees a coon. The little female gets apart of the den, and catches a greaser. We move out because other hunters have moved in on us and its getting crowded. Next drop, little female slams a greaser, the other dogs loop back towards her and are caught, educated and sent on. Raven gets treed on a den. Joe spits deep with a den. Raven gets a slick next to a junk pile. We load up and call it a night. The next night, I take Sonic, Dave has High performance GI Jo, and brother has Raven. First drop , Raven gets treed and Joe and Sonic get split deep from Raven. Raven has a coon, Joe and Sonic have put one a underground tile. We move, Raven gets treed Sonic backing, Joe splits off 150 yds. Raven has a big Den. Joe has a coon. We cut them again. They get real deep and get treed. They pulled up slick. I got wet crossing the creek to get them and so did my brother. We call it a night. Tonight, we got out early. I took Zeus,Brother took Raven and Dave had Joe. First drop. All dogs hunt out one side of section with out a bark. We drive around to the road and pick them up. We head back to hunt the other side. We cut them, Joe and Zeus come treed, Raven backs. It's a den tree, but the coon is seen just outside the hole. We lead off and cut them. Raven comes treed Zeus backs, Joe is going deep. Ravens tree is a den. We send Zeus and Raven on. Joe is getting deep towards a road. Zeus is in the opposite direction. Raven comes treed in the middle. Zeus ends up coming to Raven, I catch him and head for the truck to go pick up Joe. Raven has a den. Dave catches Joe. Brother and Dave head to the truck. We move to another big bottom. We cut them Zeus trees, Joe and Raven move on. Zeus is slick. I send him on. Zeus trees again. Its a leaning tree with a nest. Raven trees by the creek she has a coon. Joe comes treed he has a den. We load up and call it a night.

Dave,
I wish you could have stayed longer and hunted more with us. I always enjoy hunting with you, and I know my brother enjoyed it as well. Hopefully, we will see you again in a couple weeks at the Winter Classic. You got a nice hound in , Dual CH High Performance GI Joe and nice looking also. If i missed anything on these hunts please feel free to fill it in. I took a few pictures of the hounds while you were here. I will post them below. Take care.

01-11-12 HUNT

Hunted by myself last night. I took Zeus and Bash. First drop, Zeus gets treed right out the back of the truck, Bash is not that interested in it. Its a den tree that goes up into another den tree. I lead them off and cut them back loose. Zeus gets treed 150 yds on in. I set back and wait. I have lighted colors, and I can see Bash is working and checking trees. Bash locates and trees, he is treed on the back side of the tree Zeus is treed on. Its a large den tree. I lead off from there and cut back loose. They hunt the rest of the section out without getting treed. I catch them, and move. Second drop spot, Zeus hunts the section out to the south, then comes back aways and hunts out to the west. Bash is right out there with him. Bash does check in with me once and goes back out. At about 600 yds in it sounds like Zeus and Bash have come treed. I head to them. As I am walking to them I see that they are in the field next to the timber. I can hear what sounds like a coon growling and carrying on. I also can see it attacking at the dogs. Once I get there I see it is not a coon. It is one of the biggest, meanest opossums I have ever come across. We have an educating moment and head back to the truck. Third drop spot, large creek bottom section. I cut them Zeus goes south and breaks east. Bash opens a couple times south of me. Bash comes back past me and goes opposite direction of Zeus. Zeus strikes and trees shortly after getting struck. Zeus is down the road about 700yds, and in off the road 200 yds. I catch Bash, and drive down the road towards Zeus. I get across from him and walk the rest of the way in. Zeus has 2 coon in his tree. I bring one down, and it puts on an unanticipated battle with Zeus. When the smoke clears, Zeus has a 2 1/2 inch "L" shaped tear in his ear. It looks bad. We head to the truck. When I get home I clean his wound and apply some "blue lotion". It's late. I get up early and take Zeus into the Vet for repairs. It is recommended to keep Zeus laid up awhile so his repairs don't get torn loose. Below are some pictures of last nights hunt.

davemc,
You are welcome here anytime, we had a good time too. Temperatures have dropped way off and we now have a little snow and a lot of wind. Its going to rough around here for a couple days. Take care.

01-14-12 hunt.

Well the hunt didn't happen last night. Brother came over and we worked on installing Birds Eye Imagery on his new Garmin 320 he just bought. Which for us didn't turn out to be as easy as we heard it was suppose to be. To me it was very poor on installation instructions and very poor in explaining what all you can do and what everything means. I don't like just clicking on something just to try and figure something out, for me this usually sends me to a place of no return. Anyway we got some downloaded but it only let us load a very small section(8600 sq km)at standard view. You can only zoom in to 800 ft to have a picture you can make out. I don't know if that's the best the birds eye gets. After I got done messing with the Garmin. I found this on the table(see below picture.) Then I knew I wasn't going hunting.

This is what kept me IN and OUT of the cold last night.

THANKS MICHELLE, IT WAS GREAT!!!

01-16-12 hunt

Hunted by myself last night. I took Sonic by himself. I didn't go until late. I left the house at 11:00 pm. The truck thermometer for outside temp said 63 degrees at the time I left to go hunting. First drop, Sonic starts off a little slow, but gets in and gets struck. Sonic runs the track very well. Garmin shows him close to a road, so I head back to the truck and move in a little closer on him. Sonic has crossed the road and still pushing the track. Sonic comes treed. I am able to drive within 300yds of him. I get to him he is treed on a large Water oak, with the meat. Sonic did an excellent job pushing this track and having the coon at the end.
We load up and move. I see a road coon crossing a bean field, so I decided to turn Sonic out on the track. Sonic picks up the track and away he goes. it is about 400 yds to the nearest tree line. This coon puts up one heck of a race. This coon runs long and hard and tries to put the screws to Sonic, but Sonic hangs in there and keeps the pressure on Mr. Coon. Sonic comes treed. I am able to drive around and get within 250yds of him. I get to the tree it is a den. I look around and see eyes in a small tree next to the den. It is a small nervous gray squirrel. I know then Sonic has the coon in the den. So I check the den tree out good and sure enough I find the coon curled up in a hole half way up on the backside of the den. Once again, I most say Sonic did an outstanding job on pushing this coon and having the meat at the end. Next drop, short and sweet. Sonic gets treed 40 yds from the truck and has the meat. Sonic is 8 months old, he was 3 for 3 last night with some hard, long running tracks. I was very pleased and proud with how he operated. It was still 62 degrees when I headed home at 2:00 am . Below is a couple pictures of Sonic during last nights hunt.
