Of course there is a story to how Ol' Red came to be with a family full of Walkers lol. Ten years ago Cheyenne and his dad got on some kind of a trade as dad had a dog that Cheyenne wanted but there was a kicker to the deal he had to take Red too. Red is of unknown origin and unknown age at the time Chey figured him to be around the same age Mafia and was 3-4 by looking at his teeth. Chey had no use for an unpapered possibly half breed hound but momma and the kids did lol. Red had been a product of traders row. One look at this little bit shy hound dog who needed a good dose of TLC I knew he had found his forever home whether Chey agreed or not he was staying. At the time we were living on a highway and he finally said if you can keep him alive running loose here on this highway he's yours because he didn't have the space to free up a pen for him. Red's new life began. He needed a good worming and a plenty of vittles and a place to call home. Red got hit a couple of times on that highway but always eventually made it back sometimes after being gone for days. He was always taking off to take himself hunting sometimes getting treed and sometimes running deer or anything thing else that laid a track. He would take off just about anytime he was outside and still does to this day. He ended up with a permanent limp from his days back then that actually made him the perfect speed for what his new job would be. Shortly after we got him we moved back home to our house in the woods down a dead end dirt lane where we've lived nearly 20 years and a much safer place for Red. Red has always been an indoor/outdoor dog he comes in to sleep by our bed and then by the fire in the winter and goes out to chase the critters as he chooses, the perfect hound dog life you could say. His gentle disposition and being just gamey enough made him perfect to start pups with that run loose here. Ol' Red has started literally 100's of pups over the years. I've seen him more times than I could ever count wait on pups to catch up with him leaving the yard to head to the woods taking them hunting. He occasionally if trying to nap will give them the leave me alone bark if they get to chewing on his ears or tail. As I mentioned before we've always just let him do his thing which he believes to to run or tree any thing within a mile radius of home. Critter elimination you could call it. Some may disagree with our methods letting puppies out with a dog like this or never breaking him from off game but we've found it to work just fine.
Ol' Red is known throughout the neighborhood by his name where several of them leave the table scraps (his chosen diet) out their backdoors one even has a bed in their garage in case he wants to spend the night lol. Speaking of table scraps at dinnertime if the grandkids are here he has to be inside waiting because he knows food is snuck to him. Just tonight when Dalton's youngest Kase had finished his dinner he insisted on giving the rest to Red. Strangely enough for a dog that came from traders row he has always had impeccable house manners and minds like I wish my kids did! We never had to house break him Dalton just brought him in, probably on the first day I rescued him, and in all these years he only had one accident in the house.
Red is one of those dogs with a sweet disposition that you can't help but love. He is the dog that when I've done youth events that I use to teach the kids triage on basic emergency skills and dog care. They've pretended to worm him and cleaned and wrapped not there wounds all while he wags his tail.
When I guide cast here we have to swing by the house to lock him in because if not he will beat you to the hunting spot on the farm. Many of times I've had guys ask if I could turn him back loose to help the dogs out on a bad night lol.
Ol' Red is a yard dog / house dog / pup trainer / lover of his family and all children.
