We Talk About it! Where Does It Come From?

Many on here talk about BRAINS in a Hound. Many sure say the want it. I will assume we would agree that it is there in an offspring because of a GENETIC reason. If that is close to being true. Then what line of dogs would you look to for a smart puppy with the BRAINS you would want in a finished hound.

I know if someone asked me about what line of dogs put TREEING in the pups. I could answer that.
I know if someone asked me about what lines of hounds TRACKING ability comes from. I could answer that.
If someone wanted a certain mouth or color pattern. Most know what lines of dogs can produce what a person wants.

Many talk about BRAINS. What lines of hounds do you find BRAINS in. Also a short description on how a person could recognize BRAINS in a pup would be appreciated.

Imo.....no line has a dominate trait for throwing "brains" or intelligence in their pups......brains has never been a priority in the breeding of coonhounds
Titles has replaced "brains," long ago .

Dog Intelligence

The best hound that I ever had was highly intelligent with an extreme desire to please me. I bought Mick, a started dog, from a dog jockey in 1972 and at 23 years old he taught me more than I taught him.
INTELLIGENCE WITHOUT THE DESIRE TO PLEASE can be a nightmare!
I wasted 40 years of my life working natural coon treeing dogs that didn't have the intelligence to achieve the level of performance that I was after.
I bought Penney as a pup in 2011 from Jr. Deventer and she has that same combination of extreme intelligence, desire to please and ability as Mick had. Penney reproduces it in most of her pups. Ralph Jr. Deventer selected for ability in his line of dogs and he has told me numerous times that the best ones are always "lovey dovey".
HIGHLY INTELLIGENT DOGS NEED ONLY ONE EXPERIENCE TO LEARN and do not repetitive stimulation to learn and remember. They learn by watching you work other dogs just like you were doing it to them.
Mick never reproduced tree dogs, but he did reproduce the intelligence and desire to please.
Klear Kry's Gr.Nt.Ch. Deventers's Penney was the first dog to win the UKC Grandmasters in 2015.

Brains are where you find them.
If your young dog is barking all day and night in the kennel, paceing in his Dookie and jumping all over ya. Hears your sign!

I don’t think it is easily seen...but some great hunting dogs have a sophisticated air or demeanor about them and can be laid back until it is time to go to work...puppies will have it as well...imo the best thing to do with pups is test them for natural inclination...

Hound Intelligence- Where is Wild Willie

The average Hound doesn't get a chance to develop their intelligence. Dog intelligence increases in proportion to the amount of human contact you have with them. If you just feed and water them and use an electronic trainer on them without positive reinforcement you will never develop their maximum potential.
High IQ hounds respond better to a pat on the head than a kick in the ass! They learn from ONE experience without repetition training. Very similar to a Border Collie in intelligence.

Careful what ya ask for cause the dog might be smarter than the trainer himself, what I’ve found to be intelligence in a dog comes with a lil laziness, but you can work through it. I can’t hunt them rattle headed dogs no more. The correction does that type of dog little to no good. I’ve found a line of dogs that have the intelligence but like I said they come with a lil laziness.

I was told about 35 years ago by a breeder that if I was ever to start breeding hounds to make sure that you breed for brains. You can teach a smart dog to do anything, but you can never teach a dog to be smart. I have culled a lot of dogs that people would just love to hunt, but they were stupid as a bag of hammers. A smart dog takes direction well and never has rto be corrected more then once. They thrive to satisfie the handler and they just are calm and want to be a friend. I have a dogs that is a Gr.Nt. that is also a registered service dog. You can look in a dogs eyes, and like a person, can see the truth. They will sit and look at you while you talk to yhem and give you the indication that they understand and are listening. I will tolerate a few faults that others will not if the dog has a brain. Of course this is just what I have seen from the last 25-30 years. Most people that get pups from me will call me way before they start to hunt just to comment on the fact that the pup seems to be calm and really smart.

Oh my goodness, are you saying that "smart", "brains" or intelligence has to be born in a dog? You don't think that intelligence can be talked or petted into a dog?

I know what lines of Redbones possess intelligence. And if they don't truly possess intelligence it will show when they are linebred. If you linebreed smat dogs, you will get smart pups. But if you linebreed idiots, you will get idiots. But back to the original question, what lines of walkers possess intelligence? Is there a walker breeder that is breeding for intelligence or are they just breeding for deep and alone and don't care if they are idiots?

Coondog your post kind of sums up my feelings. Actually I have one here that is fairly young, that I just bred. I didn't breed him because of any titles or winnings. As he is not been comp hunted and has a long ways to go. I bred him because since he was a pup has been different from what I am use to raising and training.
His training consisted of just pointing him towards the woods and getting out of his way. If he wasn't doing something the way you like for it to be done. Just explain it to him in a gentle way and he responded well.
I want to see if his pups some of the same characteristics as he does. The Dam has had two previous litters and know the characteristics she puts in pups. They are six weeks old and are a joy to watch as they learn about life and I learn about them. I already have them responding well when called, only thing is they all have the same name. Pup Pup LOL

Here is a video I took yesterday. After I called the pups and they all came to me. I started wondering why they were all around that little fruit tree. Didn't find no coon up it but I did find one of them biggrass hoppers about 2 inches long they chased up there. In 50 years, I have never used a grasshopper to get a pup looking up. But if you give pups a chance on their own to explore. Not telling what may happen.
