Rainy Day Topic - Birddog Infl.

This is in no way, meant to run anybody down.
But I would like to discuss the bird dog influence in our hounds, yes it's true I have seen it with my own eye's in some of the most popular hounds. What does it do you say?
Well let's start with great breeders like Ferrell Miller from Ky. who has dominated field trials with his pointers who were big, big hunting dogs that were independent and had motors.(example)

I bought a male(hound) dog several years ago, whose brother was famous and his sire, that was known for those traits, getting gone, muscled up, slightly shorter ears but had a big mouth, and would go find a coon! We bred him and have never seen the inconsistency in my life, they were either really good or really bad? And I know what my females throw, they were different? Talked with men who were close to where the dogs originated and they said bird dog was eased in to make them more hard going and to go find a hot track, because while the other hounds are working a bad track, Ole go getter will find a hot coon.
Now that time has passed, Names are not needed what is some things that you guy's have seen?

Why does it matter what somebody else does? Here is the honest truth if you had something better you would have used it! I personally don't care .

I had something better believe me Was looking for an outcross.
How did we get loners?
How did we get high energy hounds, was it just thru selection?
This is not about bashing it is about learning, which is a struggle for some

Tar your secret is safe.lol

I'm not getting too deep into this but the English breed has had its fair share of "out crosses" and yes I hunt English dogs ! I know a few dogs with big names that crossed on 1-2 hound or 3/4 hound 1/4 bird dog and reproduced well .

Conrad this is just what I have seen over all these years. When I started we pretty much in Texas and surrounding states had ukc you had several things that allowed you to win tree as many coons as you could beating 3 other dogs whom Evers dog was the best track dog and tree dog on good and bad nights usually won if you did not minus out and you had enough plus to beat 60 other dogs at the club house that was it sounds easy don't it. Then came the win your cast and you advance hunts and they started breeding the dogs to work the strike rule and work the clock if they tree coons to do it ok if they don't ok but it required a special kind of dog back in the day and it's a different type of dog now two simple rule changes when sombody mentions them causes an uproar why because they would have to change everything to adapt. It is what it is it ain't going to change you just hunt what you like where you like and have fun jmo.

when there were a lot of field trials around here ole Brownie Gann and those boys would breed greyhounds bulldogs curr walker to redbone or what ever they thought would give them a better shot at the money back then as they always gambled at the trials , ole brownie would have 50- 100 dogs tied out and sold em all over the country, I sure miss those good ole days

I was just curious what percentage it took to add something in such as Pointer and yet still keep the hound traits, mouth, looks etc... and especially keep the treeing part.
The problem with it is they cannot breed true! And it will creep up on you for several generations

I don't know why people assume hounds are the only ones that have the trait to tree ! You wouldn't believe the different kinds of mutts I have seen that treed hard and had the meat to when I was a kid when we went hunting we took every dog on the farm lol.

Hounds were not natural treedogs.. treeing hounds came about from crossed up stuff. Those dogs would drop out of a fox race and tree a possum or a coon. Some guys liked that. Started breeding them dogs that would tree.. in more modern times that treeing still wasnt strong. Many would tree but wouldn't stay under pressure. Back in the day if you had a dog that would stray treed when the others were running or leaving you had a winner. To strengthen that treeing , bird dogs were crossed in
Almost every breed of dog out there except the original hounds are natural tree dogs.. a chiwawaa will tree ...find a running Walker, July, or a trigg that will tree.they won't

Makes sense, as kids a Hound would locate a few times and move on, we would have to stay close and try to run to him when he did locate, so we could find the tree.
I guess the bird dog would keep them in one spot when he located, and bark some.

Robby you know better than that. Them dogs running all night and not getting Treed are not chasing coons.. Heck they might not be running anything but there mouth. There is only two thing ezier to tree than a coon and that is a possum or a porkypine. So if your dog is making treeing coons look like it is virtually impossible...... Well you can figure that out.. now if they can burn some junk and turn it into a coon.. I'll take that!!!!

I've always heard that some German short hair is mixed in with certain Bluetick lines. Don't know how true or accurate that is. However it really doesn't make a difference to me if its true or not. I'd say the hounds displayed different traits way back when. I hunt Blueticks and a lot of them that I've owned have shown characteristics like picking a front leg up and standing at attention & winding etc that makes me ponder if those are indeed bird dog traits or just normal " dog language " I've had plenty of yard dogs that have done the same thing.
There's a small group of people who are breeding the bigger blues / gascons
To the more typical Blues for the purpose of adding more nose power. This trend seems to be gaining in popularity. These crosses I think are being done for simular reasons / likness as those of introducing traits like they used to do with the bird dogs.

Foxhounds

I seen about 10 foxhounds tree a grey fox when I use to go hunting with my uncle. They treed like they'd been treeing there whole life! It was a sight to see. We was running in the fox pen. One guys dog would tree opossums at the feeders sometimes.

Anyone ever heard coyotes tree or a wolf, just wondering I never have, But I know of a big time breeder that was trying to breed a coondog to a coyote for some strange reason a year or two ago .
