Recommend age for tie out?

How old do you usually put dogs on chain?

The sooner the better for teaching them to tie. I have found that it is MUCH less dramatic on the pup if you teach them to tie between 8-12 weeks old. The longer you allow them to go past 12 weeks, the more dramatic it seems to be on them that they don't have free range.

The closer they get to 4-5 months before you tie them, the more they fight it, and have an initial bad experience.

My last one was 4 months old when I started tieing him out, don't think I've ever tied one out much younger than that but defiantly don't want to leave it until they are a older mature dog, they don't take to it always as good.

I agree with Rocketman55 except I tie them at 6 weeks. I tie them up for about 15 minutes, they usually fight less than 3 minutes. I do this again a few days later and usually have no fight. They usually never fight later either.

Not for 6-8 months if I can help it.

I hate raising pups. I'm lucky my partner is good with them and they get to roam his 200 acres til they are ready to go to school.

I'm with Rocketman. 8-12 wks. Of course you have to keep an eye on them the first couple times until they figure some basics out.

Also make sure you have the collar a little tighter than normal. Some will fight it by pulling backwards, if they slip their collar, some wont forget it.

Had an older walker on trial once and was told to wear a double collar on him and tie him to the back collar because he would try to slip it at a new place to see if he could get away with it.

Sure enough.......he pulled backwards for several minutes when I first tied him. He had to test and make sure. Lol.

Get a long cable and tie it between 2 trees. Put a n O ring on the line, attach a spring to the O ring and snap a lead or chain to the other end of the chain. Put cable cable clamps on the cable out from the trees (so he can get around the trees). The spring will give, at the same time pull back on him, that will help get used to being pulled back and get him used to giving to pressure. You'd be surprised how much easier it'll be when you start teaching him to lead.

You can buy ready made kits, but I made my own. You can get everything you need to make it at tractor supply. The kits my local feed store sales has smaller cables than what I got from tractor supply.
