It's going to be different for each dog. I've treated dogs for months without any issue with Doxycycline. You never know when resistance is going to become an issue.

I have a dog that still eating, drinking, and overall looks ok. However, the last couple of days has seemed to become lethargic and last night didn't go hunting like normal and seemed just kind of flat out lazy!!! Normally Very high strung and goes hunting hard and hustles and right now he is laid back at home in the kennel which is definitely not like him. Lol!!! Just wondering your thoughts before I take him to the vet for blood work??

Those are the tough ones Bryan. It's really hard to diagnose these cases without performing a physical exam and performing some basic bloodwork to rule out systemic disease. You are doing the right thing by taking him in. I've seen tick born diseases to be a common cause of lethargy in coondogs so if everything comes out clean on the regular blood panel I submit a full tick panel to Idexx Labs. It usually takes 4-5 days to get back but it is the most comprehensive panel I've seen yet. I just diagnosed Cand. Mycoplasma haematoparvum on a recent tick panel in a coondog. This panel includes a 4DX test for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis along with a comprehensive PCR test for most tick born illnesses in the US. I'd also recommend sending in a fecal sample for analysis.

Good luck!

I know all kinds of wormer questions have been ask on here hundreds of times. Here is what I use, can you tell me if it's efficient and safe? 16oz of 50mg/ml pyrantel, 25 grams of praziquantel in powder form (used for fish ponds), 10ml ivomec. All this mixed together and dosed at 1ml/10lbs... Also is it actually necessary to treat for heart worms every month, or say would every 45 days or two months be fine? Thanks in advance

I thought maybe someone had revived a club down south.
We've done RQEs off and on for years up here. Sure wish the UKC events in the western states would get active like it used to be. It was a lot of fun!

female came up lame

We have a 6 year old female that whelped a litter of pups a few weeks ago. She has become lame in her left hip. We 1st noticed it when the pups were about 4 weeks old. She doesn't act like she is in pain she just refuses to use her left hind leg. Is this a cause for major concern. thank you

rabies vaccine

Is it common for a young hound to have a reaction to a first time rabies vaccine 7 days after vaccinated?

Warm ears, lost appetite but it has improved, and everything he eats has been going through him.

I think using Ivermectin 1% at .1cc per 10# is sufficient for most dogs that are over 5 months old and have been on a good deworming program. If you are using a good flea program then you shouldn't need tapeworm control. That being said, I use Interceptor Plus in all my dogs. It gets all 4 major worms commonly seen and prevents heartworm. It's the best out there for the money for broad spectrum.
Your dosing looks right to me. Make sure your Praziquentel dosing and Ivermectin dosing is right because that is where you will run into issues with dogs with over dosing. Pyrantel is relatively safe for dogs at high doses.

As far as Heartworm prevention goes, definitely deworm monthly for prevention. While it has been shown in research that Ivermectin can reach back and kill larvae exposure 2 months prior , it's better to be safe than sorry.

There are other antibiotics that can be used to treat Ehrlichia. I'm sure your vet would be able to go over that list. I also found a list online here last week under a Gov document.

It certainly can be a concern. There are so many things that can lead to lameness in dogs. Being a rear leg it may be related to laying around and applying pressure to the hips, a lumbo sacral disk or lumbar muscle tightness, hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis of hips, spine, knees, hocks, ACL tear of the stifle joint or anything affecting the paw or other joints. I think I could come up with a list of 30 or 40 things that can cause this. Hard to diagnose that one without putting my hands on her. Definitely concern enough to have her checked out by your veterinarian.

Good luck,
Doc

It would be uncommon that late after vaccination. What type of rabies vaccine was it? Company and name of vaccine.

Was it done at a Veterinary facility? If so you might be eligible for reimbursement from the vaccine company if he needs treatment.

Usually reactions to vaccines occur within the first 24-48 hours. We rarely see reactions to Rabies vaccine but I'm sure there are a few out there that are still problematic.

Good luck,

Doc

got a appointment in today and took him to the vet. He's had diarrhea since the 27th. On the 27th and 28th his ears were real warm and had zero appetite. He's regularly a high strung dog, but during those two days all he wanted to do was curl up in a ball. Changed up his food to a bland diet, and as of two days ago he started coming around.

Vet said today he had hook worms. Interesting discovery since I wormed him in the spring and he's been on concrete run for the past three months, and the runs are bleach scrubbed every Sunday and hosed out every other day. Vet vaccine was from the counties free rabies clinic for county residents. Got him updated on other shots while at the vet, and will have him wormed when I feed tonight. We'll get him cleared out and back in the timber in no time

Bravecto

Dr Hallada, I want to keep my dogs on Bravecto and wanted to purchase the largest size and split and give to my 55 lb hounds. My vet won't sell it that way. Just for the size of each dog which makes it twice as high. Is there any way I can get Bravecto in the large size. Thanks

This is a good example of why I recommend monthly deworming with products like Interceptor Plus (milbemycin), and Heartgard Plus (Ivermectin). It doesn't cost much to keep them parasite free.
Glad you got your answer and your dog is doing better. Good stuff!

I got a question about a dog I had 8 years ago. I know you cannot tell me for certain but a guess would make me feel better.

He was a 3 year old walker male, really hyper dog. I noticed on a Sunday when I let him out to run around the yard that he was just standing there with his head down and a slight hump in his back. I took him to an emergency vet and they checked blood and did an ex-ray. Blood work showed elevated white cells but nothing else. They didn’t know what was going on but gave me antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds. I came home from lunch the next day to give him meds and when I lifted his head he screamed in pain. I call a friend to get him to a vet by the time he got there (I had to go back to work) the dog acted paralyzed. The only thing that he was moving was his eyes. When you tried to move him he would open his mouth like he was trying to bark but nothing would come out. He was too late to make the vet and at the time I couldn’t afford another $1000 emergency vet visit. I couldn’t stand it and put him down. What in the world could it have been?

You're a busy man on here Doc and I know it's much appreciated by all. I've learned a lot from posts that others asked. One quick question on feed. I started Victor 24/20 almost a year. I don't have any of the hounds now that I had last summer. One is a 70 lb very healthy dog. I hunt him 5-6 nights a week. It's hot and very humid in south Ga right now. The last few weeks he seems to pant with his tongue out all the time. Even before I cut him loose. One mile plus is still not uncommon with him. He still hunts good. Question is......should i back down on either the fat, or the protein? Again, thanks for what you do.

I have a 5 year old Black and Tan. He gets skin infections, the last couple I had to have them cut out because antibiotics did not help.i have been to two different vets and no one can say what causes it. I have tried every kind of food with the same results. Know he is on Acana singles duck and pear. This dog looks and acts healthy as they come . The infections show up randomly with no warning. Thanks
