No Reverse

I hear people say that there ideal dog would have no reverse. I have two honest questions. Do you really want a dog that when he has gone 2 miles and not found a coon just keeps on going? With all the roads and loosing hunting ground do you have a place where you can hunt such a dog?

It’s not difficult to tone break a hound, or even come when called.

I don't want reverse in a night hunt especially lol. I want 1 or 2 hours of all gas no brakes.

Tom ,
I have honest answers.

Yes i do, when i get sick of him/her going i will catch her somewhere when i decide to, If i get close i CAN catch mine without a electric necklace. But they better have NO QUIT in their heart & have a burning desire to FIND a coon every time i cut them as soon as i cut them not run half mile from me and then start hunting.

Also yes i do have ALOT of ground to hunt this kind of a dog . I may not have many coon but i have ALOT of ground .

Thanks for the comments. This was not to start an argument but I really wanted to know. I was raised to dislike a no reverse dog because we couldn't keep up with them. Spent way too much time looking for the dog. Dog I have now is as good as I have owned but in the summer he does not hunt as hard as I want him to. Winter is just right. Did have Ehrlicia but I don't think that is it. he is completely tone broke, won't hunt one that isn't. If I get this right you guys do want a reverse but one you control.

Who cares. That type dog wins aplenty!

And in a timeout, mine will come back when they hear me...well, most of them. Some of these yankee specials that get sent my way need reminders and I'm not shy about reminders.

Growing up we hunted big mountain woods almost exclusively with the old beep systems. Spent a ton of time looking/listening for a dog. But, we knew the ridge peaks where a man could hear 360 for miles and miles. That said, I also had to leave them more than once, come back early to look again. I don't miss those days much at all, and the garmin helped me wanna hunt more and have more of that type of hound.

Most of my hunting is pleasure hunting. For the last 34 years I have been getting up for work at 5:00am. I have lost many a night sleep on a dog that you didn't put your hands on until he treed. Now I train my dogs to come, if they can hear me call they come, If they can't hear me call, the tone brings them in. If you call that a reverse, well that's what I got, and wouldn't have it any other way. But they better go hunting and stand gone until they tree or get called in.

The way I hunt mine is probly not good for a competition dog. But I cut mine off the tailgate they leave I get out my thermos of coffee and listen to the race and the tree. I am not in any hurry to get there I don’t pressure my dogs I let them make their own decisions. Then if they are close I walk if not I drive till I am close as I can get. Sometimes it’s a death march but that comes with it. But I get mine at the tree and more times than not I cast them again right from that tree.

No Reverse??

I had 1st hand experience of this type of dog back in the early 70's. I owned one that you absolutely had to pick him off the tree or cut him off somewhere along the way if you wanted to go home. No tracker, no e-collar or toning him in. Just pure gut wrenching travel through these WV hills to find him treed. Many times I'd get home just an hour or so before having to head to work. I absolutely loved it! I couldn't wait for dark to come. Now, when it gets dark I'm looking for a reason not to go, LOL! I still want my dog to get in there and get me a coon. It takes me much longer to get to the tree now but I still get there. We have a fair population of coon here now compared to many years ago when if you got 3 or 4 a week, that was a good week. Now if a dog goes a mile and don't strike and tree a coon around here, you'd better be finding another dog. To answer your question, I want them to GO and in a hurry! I'll get them one way or the other.

Tom, I want one that's always moving and looking but not in a straight line leaving the country. I also do not want to see him coming back until I decide it's time for him to come back.

You can always take hunt out of them but you'll have a hard time giving one more hunt. Just my .02 but I prefer one different than most.
