Are you kidding me! I let this one slip through the cracks without responding. Sorry about that.
SCENARIO:
Scoring Dogs Treed in a Hole
Dog's A, B, C, and D are declared struck, in that order. Dog's A and B are declared treed, in that order. The five is up. Dog's C and D have not been declared treed.
When the cast arrives, they find all four dogs treeing at a hole in the ground. All dogs are handled. All four handlers see the coon in the hole, that is out of reach of the dogs.
What is the "total score" for each dog, in this situation?
Dog A _____
Dog B _____
Dog C _____
Dog D _____
ANSWER: Rule 3 applies to this scenario.
Rule 3. POINTS WILL BE PLUS
(b) when dog is declared struck and treed and coon is seen other than in tree, dogs declared treed to receive strike and tree points. Dogs not declared treed, strike points only.
The correct scoring for each dog is:
A: 225+
B: 150+
C: 50+
D: 25+
This the "hole" or "place of refuge" rule we talk about where dogs can receive plus strike points without being declared treed.
(Just in case we ever cover a Stationary Rule as it relates to dogs treed in the ground or in a place of refuge)
This is also the rule that we use to discourage judges from applying the Stationary Rule when dogs might be treed in the ground for the fact that a dog is not required to be declared treed in this situation. In other words, don't try to force a handler to declare their dog treed unless you're fairly confident that they are in fact treed on a tree.
