Klear Kry Zip

The year old dog I'm currently hunting is the type of dog that Mr. Conkey describes. He is a pleasure dog first, but Saturday he won a walker sectional by treeing layup coon that the other dogs didn't know were there. It was very hot and the coon was laying on horizontal limb on its belly with all four legs hanging down. He is very smart and the challenge that I'm currently having is that when other dogs run junk he tattles on them and comes in and stands by me. Then goes back and trees a coon. His mother Penney would do the same thing.
Most layup, winding dogs of years past were medium to hot nosed dogs and most cold nosed track dogs couldn't tree by winding. Mating the two types together was like mixing oil and water. It wouldn't work.
Zip is an honest first strike dog that can tree any kind of a coon and takes them as he comes to them. He is 18 months old and has had less than 10 coon. Maybe I should change his name to Miracle Whip, the perfect blend of oil and water!

Enjoy him while you got him......

..... watching what my hunting buddy has been through and the thousands of dollars he's spent trying to find a good one, the type of dog you describe yours to be, are few and far between! Wanna sell him?

Bruce, I thought I got it on video last night but apparently didn't hit record. I walked in to Wood treed and when I got there he wasn't on a tree. The woods are big and wide open and he was about 20 yards from the closest tree setting flat of his butt treeing. I walked up to him and he stopped barking and started staring up and to his right. I shined where he was looking and a half grown kitten was about 40 feet up on the end of a limb. He knew exactly where it was. That is Locating ability and it is what makes accurate dogs.

i have noticed over the years the dogs that have locating ability and accurate are also good at striking winding coon while rigging from a moving vehicle .

Striking, Winding, and Locating

I like breeding my own pups or if buying pups I will try and buy at least two but will try to buy at least 3...

My chances go up in getting one or two pups that will hunt as I like...

For me one of the most important things to do is find out what comes natural to each pup...I test them for winding and locating ability and how efficient they are at doing it...trailing not so much on account they will learn that pretty quick...

The pups who are good at it will become good to great hunting dogs more often than not...I have done it this way for many years and have had very few culls selecting this way...

I believe the natural ability to wind is one of the most important qualities for a hunting dog to have...and the next thing is natural locating ability...
Natural locating ability is having the knack on how to look and where to look...

Bruce, this is a example of a dog that knows where a coon is in the tree. He stops barking if he knows you are messing with a gun and just stares where the coon is. He doesnt do it on every tree but does it a lot if he just falls treed with no track. He isn't looking in the spot because we are shinning the light. We shined that spot because thats where he was looking.

Lol, it wasn't me but in his defense that old gun doesn't shoot worth a crap. Its got a Popsicle stick under the sights and I'm about the only one that can hit with it. Its also a single shot and it hangs a shell every other shot.

Michael

I have a 22 about like that one. Bought it over 40 years ago for $12.50. Had to make a new firing pin out of a knife blade. Still the only gun I use coon hunting. And yes it will misfire occasionally. But it is a good excuse for missing, lol.

I don't think the dog was very impressed with the shooting either. We complain about a dog's accuracy. Do you think they think the same of us.
