This thread is kind of old, but I was wondering if anyone had any updated experiences...

I have stood many a night searching a tree with what seems like a million leaves wondering if it is slick or not and thought about using a heat gun like the one we have at work to at least try to find a hot spot on the tree.

Thermal imagers have advanced light years since this thread started and have downward spiraled in cost. Like this one here: https://www.thermal.com/hunting-outdoors.html (Seek, $300/$500). I was thinking about buying one for some other reasons and the wooly tree issue came to mind again.

I have a young pup I am looking forward to starting and keep thinking how handy it would be to have an extra set of eyes like a thermal camera to help spot coons or trash. While 300-500 is not exactly chump change, it's comparable to every other item we purchase to find and tree coons.

Thoughts?????

I have a FLIR it works, even in the summer with the leaves on most of the time if I can get around the tree and see most of it I can find the coon.

My question is can I use it in a UKC hunt?

.There are many models of these things on the market, and until you get to the ones that are of Fire department and military grade worthy, they are junk! Of course the good ones cost $25,000.00 and up.....

Yes those models do work and borrowed a set and took them out hunting one night. Good thing my Sergeant Major or Commander did not know. $20,000 and up
