Sadly, those days are long gone, most hunts today are hunting off buckets, feeders and show no real ability. The hunts were conceived to showcase a dogs ability, but have become something totally different these days. One good thing is that you and I hunted when it was the real deal best coon dog win era of competition hunts, they can't take that away from us. We are past our prime and it's a different world these days. All I can say is that I am proud that we got to see and hunt in a time when it took a coon dog to win these hunts. Dave
Must be there's different types of dogs in all parts of the country. Because there's guys that pack around me too dogs here. And there's plenty of them at that. And I can honestly say I don't think its easier to train a dog to be alone. I think its easier to train to train a dog in a pack. But it depends upon what your dog is naturally whether its independent or likes to be in company. If your dog is a pack type, and that's what you prefer....... You feed it not me. As long as the dog suits the owner is all that matters.
I like a dog that will tree with other dogs if they strike the same track. But I don't like a dog that leaves a track to cover or to investigate what others are doing (ie: big ears). Mine don't have to be alone, I like one that's indifferent about other dogs. One that won't leave an area because another dog barked. Every dog I've kept for any length of time was indifferent to other dogs. This type tends to hunt the way I like. They don't blow out to a mile before using their nose. They start hunting from the snap or within a couple hundred yards from the snap. I don't find it enjoyable to spend most of night walking long distances to dogs that passed several coons.
