Good dog gone bad...

Have an older (almost 10) redbone that was just a good old coondog. He stays at my dad's house and there are two others. Dad moved him next door to our female who came in heat soon after. He kind of went crazy not being able to get to her. Bit my dad while he was cleaning out the pen. Used the scoop to keep him at bay to get out.

Continued to growl at us while the female was in heat. We were careful while feeding. Seemed to get better after dog came out of heat. Tonight, had them out together and he was smelling her and being protective of her. Turned his back on the tree and barked outward. Jumped our young male and seemed to get confused by the lights. Kind of came after us a little. Dad clipped him and loaded him in dog box. When we got him back to his doghouse, he was fine again.

Planning to get rid of him. He might be fine away from the female, but I don't trust him anymore.

Thoughts?

Best way to make a dog mean is to put it in a pen next to a female in heat especially if other male dogs are around

Anybody

Anybody want him? Think I'm gonna get rid of him. Can't make any guarantees except I know he can tree a wild coon by himself, but he's acting weird right now. Make me an offer. (256)486-7878

Friend

Not trying to be mean but if you don't trust him why would you try giving him to someone else? What if he was to bite a kid? He bit the guy that feeds him and shows awkward aggression - only one solution, get the shovel out!

If he's like that,I wouldn't even think about letting someone else have him,,let alone sell him to someone.

Well

Wasn't hiding anything, and he's been a good coondog that can get it done by himself. Someone might have an interest. He might be fine in a different setting. We're adults here. Nobody's forcing anything on anyone. It's all above board.

I had an old clover dog for eleven or twelve years. He went crazy like that. Not around the tree, but at the house and dog box more than anywhere. He stood on the tailgate one night after hunting and wouldn't let me put him in the box. I let it go though. He sent me to the hospital one night after feeding him to get stitches in my neck. I dispatched him before I went to the hospital though. If that had been one of my little girls or my wife instead of me I could have never lived with myself for letting it go after the first time. It totally changed my attitude for dealing with one. They better not ever even look at me cross eyed now.

My vet told me that old dogs can get a form of dementia similar to what some humans get. When an old dog's behavior changes that much, something has happened. He's probably going to get worse.

We saw this with one of ours. We totally separated them and he got better. He was never ill to ppl tho.

Prostrate problems in older dogs can cause issues too. If he means anything to you, have him checked out then decide
