Barking in box

3 month old barking in dog box. How do I correct this problem or will he grow out of it. Been out of coon hunting for years. Never had a problem before. Help please!

E-Collar, if the pup has any sense it won’t take long to fix. I absolutely cannot stand a dog barking in the box, it drives me insane.

It's 3 months old, that's just over a month off the tit. Do not shock it at this age!

agreed.
this is why dogs are ruined as pups.
E-collar or shock collar is NOT a cure all.
I would guess you have this pup either tied out or in a kennel when you say in its dog box.
How long have you had him/her ?
I'm going to guess not long.
It is either lonely or bored. Diversion training at this age would be best . And keep him/her tired. Tired pups are good pups.

So my suggestion. Let this pup run and romp as much as you can. Wear him/her out.
Make sure it has plenty of feed and a full belly. Hungry pups will cry, whine, and fuss just like human babies.
Give it plenty of toys to chew on and a nice big beef bone to gnaw on to keep its mind occupied.

I will also add that this kind of advice for a pup this young drives me insane! If you would like to ruin it before you ever get started follow his advice.

Most very young pups will bark when hauled in a dog box alone. It is like sticking a baby in a box alone. Many will not if put in the same side as a well tempered older dog or any other well tempered dog for that matter. Really young pups quite often just ride in the front of the truck with us.. Make sure you give them time to empty out before hauling. At 3 months old most have no idea what is going on and that hunting may been involved, with time they figure out the reward. Pups at this age still need security.
I give you this advice as someone who has started literally 100's of pups (not an exaggeration).

Thanks for all of the advice. I was talking about in the truck box. Just trying to get him use to riding and getting him use to the woods.

I've had good results by using a dog crate. The wire ones and putting it right next to my rear window which is a sliding window and talking to them. Start with small trips like around the block or to the store and back and gradually increase the distance until they are comfortable with the crate.

Then I switch to a regular dog box and start again with short trips. It also helps sometimes if you have a gentle mannered old dog that can ride with it and keep it occupied while also showing it the proper way to act.

Good luck and welcome back.

Cheers,
Coby

Some dogs now days are wound so tight u don't have a choice. Not saying that's what the issue is here and I wouldn't recommend putting an e collar on one that young in the dog box riding in the truck. However, IF a 3 month old pup has had plenty of interaction with you and other dogs, IF it has had ample time to run and get energy out, and it still insist on barking in the kennel I will not put up with it. In this kind of instance I am either cutting my losses or its getting an e collar. If it has any sense at 3 months old it will catch on but u cant treat all dogs the same and have to know which kind can take it an which ones cant.

You know I'm not going to tell you that!
I will use today as an example... 1 10 week old, 1 12 week old, 1 4 mo old of mine in the yard. 2 around 6 mo that belong to others. Later this week I pick up a weaning pup that is ours and mid October another around 6 mo old that is coming in to run loose. It's been this revolving door of pups here at this house for over 18 years this does not count the others for the 11 years prior. If I used a conservative answer of average of 2 different pups a month for just the 18 years that is well over 400.

Please don't shock that pup. He will relate the box to the shock and will not want to load. Put a toy in there.

Geez that’s awful young. I’ve got one that will open up on coon scent from the box and I’d hate to know I ruined him from doing so at an early age because I’ve had some fun riding around government woods letting him strike them from the truck

Like it has already been mentioned put him in the box with an older dog you trust...

I know you asked about barking in the dog box...but usually the problem starts in the kennel...when my pups bark in the kennel when I’m walking to the garage or whenever they see me I ignore them and go about my business...if they don’t bark I go to their kennel and give them attention...if no bark they get attention if barking no attention...a little tweaking here and there and the pups do pretty good after a while...

I understand that a 3 month old pup is very young. I’m not taking him hunting at 3 months just trying to get him use to the woods, riding in the box,and for him to get use to water. I do not have an old dog. Trying to train him by himself. I just want to do what’s best for him. Thanks again for the advice.

Nothing wrong with getting him out and letting him roam anytime you can. You may have to get some ear plugs or crank up the radio for awhile lol.

I know a fellow that rides his 8 year old hound in the front seat of his truck. He barks all the way to the hunt, the whole while he's on the hunt grounds, all the way to the woods, for 2 hours on the cast , all the way back to the club house and all the way back home.

Thanks to all the post that were meant to help. I went to a competition hunt this past weekend. When I heard the results, I was told that there were almost 2 fights. That’s one reason I quit coon hunting. I know everyone wants to win but come on,it’s dogs. I look at some of the post on the different coon hound forums and see the arguments on them and I understand why people argue in the woods. I want to have fun. Thanks again.

It's bad enough to have your dog barking while you're riding, I don't need him barking while on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

.

After reading your post. I decided to try something with a pup I have here. Yesterday when I went out to clean pens and feed dogs. I drove my Side by Side back to the pens. I put an older dog in one side of the box and let a 4 month old pup run around. She stood on the tailgate barking to get in the box. I put her in the box and she then barked to get out.
So when ever you think you have a problem to solve with a pup. The next guy has two problems to solve. I will use time to solve mine. Hope your realize time will probably solve yours also.

If they will bark in a 10 x 12 kennel wanting out, then you know that they are going to bark in a 3 x 2 box. The first step is teaching them what 'no" means and not to bark in the kennel. Then they know what you want when you tell them not to bark in the box. You can use a switch, a big stick or an e collar to teach them not to bark in the kennel, depending on the pup.

Just my 2 cents worth: Most people misuse a shock collar. I use one and almost never set it high enough to make the dog yelp. (The exception is a hardheaded older dog that just won't respond) I try to set the level to the point it simply makes them shake their head a little. Start lower than that and work up. I think it's better than physical punishment from me. Now with that said with young pups I try changing environment or conditions. I just don't like to punish a young pup. Now at about 6 months I start changing that according to the pup. But even at 6 months most can't take a lot of hard punishment. Much better to be consistent with lower level punishment. And yes I grew up in the time when we whipped dogs with dog chains till they couldn't get up. Never saw that do a lot of good. But 50 years ago we didn't have the equipment we have today.
