I use it every winter. Depending on how cold, I give a 2"x 2" (cut in half )chunk daily. If not so cold, adjust accordingly. Our local butcher also has ground beef heart, 3-4 oz every 2-3 days.
Remember, the Klondike dog sled race? All they feed their dogs are whale blubber... Easy to carry, plenty of energy and they have used raw fat for years.
But if it warms up, stop. It will give a dog the runs ..... Cause they don't need it then... Good luck!

I only use it during cold weather. When it is hot, they don't need added fat, if anything, I use lower fat in their food. As I said, will give them the runs and possible hot spots... I'd advise against it.

Don't all of the good dog foods have all of the Omegas already added? And if you are trying to add weight wouldn't it be better to add muscle mass rather than fat? Wouldn't it be better to have a skinny dog than a fat one? I can understand putting a little melted fat on their dog food to get them to eat more dog food. But just supplementing it with pure fat surely can't be good for them. They are coonhounds, not sled dogs.

I agree Richard...however sled dogs are work horses and have an amazing amount of energy endurance as well as plenty of raw muscle mass....and fat = energy and fat turns into muscle with excersise....so ultimately wouldn't a man that hunts hard have an increased success rate of his hounds having plenty of energy as well as muscle and looking good ?

Coca Cola and potato chips. That's what my cousin ate and she gained 150 pounds in 2 years.

Fat adds calories. Calories are needed to keep warm and exercise with plenty of energy. I have done this for 35 years, will continue. A little fat layer helps insulate and keep warm. Always use beef fat, never pork. Us hunters up north that get -25° temps and are hunting at 0° ... I think it helps.. alot

Why not pork fat? I've never heard this, not trying to start a big argument but have never heard this, just wondering the reason behind no pork fat.

I agree with harleydan i have running dogs that are run all winter hard on coyote it gets to the point where even feeding twice a day with a good dog foods not enough and they need fat. Never feed raw pork it has parisites and needs to be cooked. I will feed pork cooked never raw.

Its an old wives tale that raw pork has parasites and worms in it. Surprising how many people feel that way about it though. I’ve fed it to dogs in abundance for 18 years, never had any problems with it.

Beef fat / pork fat ....I supplement w/both, been doing it for a decade+. Never had any adverse issues with pork fat.
One thing I do is soak both in 120° hotwater.
I supplement year round with both.
Fat has twice the calories (energy) as protein or carbs.
Its a dogs primary source of fuel or should I say a dog is designed to use fat first as it's primary source of fuel .
Contrary to what was stated earlier.....protein builds/repairs muscle not fat..Fat fuels the muscles.

And what I first stated. I give ground beef heart for protein. Plus the protein in the dog food. As far as pork fat, I know the slop they some times eat. Fat stores any and all "undesireables" in it. Most of the time it would be no problems, but I won't take the chance over grass, grain or corn fed beef fat.

The reason some say not to use porkfat is because of Trichanella spiral is. It is the same reason that years ago they recommended cooking pork to well done of around 160-165 degrees. Nowadays pork can be cooked safely to about 140 and be juicy instead of being overlooked and dry.
