How do I keep a trained hound from going deep

So recently I purchased an English coonhound that is a nite champ but hunts out around 200-300 plus yards but here I only need him to go about 50 yards (thick coon). All my life I've walk hunted just getting back into hunting any suggestions would be great.

I'm not trying to be smart at all but if he can hit a coon every 50 yards or close to it. Then it shouldn't be a problem? If he is having to go 2 or 300 yards to get struck then you will have to walk him that far to walk him over a coon if you have him rained into 50 yards.. You by all means do what you like and I hope you have a ball doing it, but a lot of people would call 2 or 300 yards not going hunting, sure wouldn't call it going deep.

To do what you want, make sure he has a handle so you can call him back. Every time he gets further than you like call him back. He will eventually get so that he just kind of walks with you. Keep in mind that you will never be able to sell this hound if you decide to once you get him like that.

Is there a place on this planet where a coon can be struck every 50 yards?

Get a cur they are bred more for staying close and pleasure hunting. There aren't many hounds left that haven't been bred to go deep fast.

I thought the same thing, if he can tree a coon every 50 yards then he should.
Carson Jones dog don't hunt deep the bark coming out of the box and never shut up until treed.

Several things come into play here you said recently give him time to settle in maybe he had to hustle where he came from it just might be a habit. Maybe is is going till he finds a coon he can smell. I have been in places where I seen coons setting everywhere but the dogs could not smell them if he is treeing coons that close just enjoy him I would.

i would enjoy that hound the way he is, and maybe look for a walk hunt type dog. in addition to or instead of the one you have. ive seen a few advertised on here, or look for a cur- they usually do real well with that type of hunting. 200-300 is a very close hunting dog to me (and most others)

Thats what I was telling him. The one I have goes deep, but if I'm hunting him in small woods all I have to do is call him to me when he starts to get out of the woods. He will only hunt out a 3 to 400 yards then and keep making circles back to me. Until I put a leash on him and send him again. Then he goes on.
