Tick preventative

I know this has been talked about before, but whats your tick preventative routines? Around me most coon dogs are getting Lymes, Erlicia, or Anaplasmosis. This is ruining dogs. Its affecting there joints, thyroids, overheating, and loss of nose. Some get better with the 30 days doxy and some never truly recover. Has anyone treated with the Imizol shot with the doxy? Lets get a lot of info out there...…… go

Nexguard. Get it for the 55 to 110 lb dog and cut it up n half. I order mine from VetMeds4Pets. Cost is $8.?? per chewable. Amounts to a little over $4 a month.

Yes, I had mine treated twice with doxy 1 time with imizol. Blood tested did not change. My dog does not look good in hot weather.

Here is my 2 cents , I use the seresto collar, give simparaca once a month and spray with repellent before cutting loose. I personally vaccinate for Lyme (it seems to be the most rampant issue here) . With that all said and knock on wood, it seems to be working. Many times this winter I would see multiple ticks crawling on my dogs when I get them off a tree, but never found one attached. They have been unbelievable the last 2 winters here. The imozol is better with some other tick illnesses besides the Lyme (my understanding) but I been told it helps with those a high percent of the time.

That’s what I recommend Sonny. Simparica is the fastest tick kill oral pill on the market right now. Combined with a good topical product fir repellency I think is the best way to avoid tick disease in your dogs.

Permethrin spray, I mix it from concentrate or use the sawyer brand. It works!

I just got done treating mine with doxy. My vet told me the ticks secrete an enzyme and they can get it from that. She said the tick did not have to bite them. Is there any truth to that?

Yes Permethrin is the least expensive and probably the most effective topical spray for repelling ticks on dogs. Just be careful mixing the concentrated stuff. Follow directions closely because at higher concentrations Permethrin is very toxic to dogs.

no oral on the market has a fast enough tick kill time to prevent tick disease ,new studies show that tick disease from feeding to infection can be as little as 2 hours ,if you are finding dead ticks on your dog that have feed on blood your dog is at risk ,if your dog has a adverse drug event from orals there is no antidote to counteract the poison they contain ,I have been using the seresto collars now for 4 years and never found a dead tick or flea on any of my hounds .don't need a topical product to back them up either ,

Seresto collars are good but not always effective on their own for preventing tick borne illness in dogs. I can give you a list of people who found this out the hard way. I’ve seen a few dogs come into my practice with Seresto collars on and they still have fleas on the rump area and ticks on their legs. It’s also expensive , especially when a dog loses it. Best prevention in my opinion is a combination of topicals with systemic orals. Vaccination for Lyme disease is a good thing in areas where it’s a problem.

Imizol has been on manufacturer back order for almost a year now. Not sure when it’s coming back.
I do think it has made a difference in treatment of a few dogs in the last two years. I hope we get it back soon. Until then , keep those dogs protected.

I haven’t seen any long term effects of using either product in dogs. No changes in kidney or liver values. There are a few dogs that develope seizures while on this class of medication. They are very few. These are the best flea/tick products I’ve seen in my 30 years of practicing vet med. just remember that when you are using topical sprays or collars , dogs ingest those chemicals daily also when they lick themselves. When Permethrin was first released in a topical spray and later in a topical spot on , we had more reactions than I’ve ever seen with these new products, and they were severe. Permethrin and it’s analogues found in products like Seresto Collars can cause severe neurological disease from hypersalivation, trembling to all out seizures and hyperthermia and death. Be careful when using any permethrin product on dogs and be sure the dilution is safe before applying it. You also need to be really careful storing the concentrated permethrin and discarding it safely. It’s really toxic to the environment and to children and cats. Just do a search on Amazon for Seresto collar reviews and the number of side effects seen in smaller dogs. A few years ago there were problems found in about 10% of online reviews. In larger dogs , the toxicity issues appear to be far less. So in puppies I’d be really careful. They like to chew on each other’s collars and if they get them off and chew them up , then it could be a problem.

Doc, I also vaccinate for the Lyme and it seems to work well for us in this area. We often have ticks crawling on us and dogs while hunting around here. Do you have a type or manufacturer that u recommend ? Not long ago I was chastised for using it on here. I was told side effects are to serious to risk the use of it and it doesn’t last very long. I would say we and our dogs are in a epidemic area for Lyme and the risk is worth it here. Many many dogs are treated for it in our area.

The only thing I have found as far as mixing 10% Permethrin for use on dogs, is to mix 1.28 oz of 10% Permethrin to 128 oz of water. It says to totally soak the dog, either by dipping, or spraying, being careful not to get it in there eyes, face, or genitals. Let dry, then reapply in 30 days. This mixture might be to strong to use each time you hunt the dog. Or is it?

Lyme disease

I vaccinate all my dogs for lyme disease and also use Frontline plus as a topical medication.I live in one of the highest Lyme disease areas in the whole country Cape Cod Massachusetts. And don't have a dog with Lyme disease in 20 yrs and I am in the woods 4 nights a week sometimes more.Yes there is no 100% method to prevent some infection at some point. But if your hounds mean something to you then it's your responsibility to take care of them with a tick preventing program

I have a gallon of 10% permethrin. What should my ratio be for a spray mix?

Thanks Dick. I found it. This definitely isn't a day to day spray. I want something I can spray before and after each hunt.

With permethrin 10, mix 19 oz water to 1 oz permethrin. That dillutes it to .05 the same as Sawyers. I usually just do 20 to 1, easier to measure.

Doc

the f,d,a, has not issued alerts for seresto collars for pet owners and vets , the f,d,a, has issued alerts for simplairica and nexgaurd bravettco ,

Seresto Collars are not a drug and are not FDA regulated. They are chemical collars and regulated by the EPA.
