Have a 3 yr old dog that will tree coons one night and then run a trail all night without making a tree the next 3 nights, any advice would be appreciated.

Send the dog in the direction of a coyote, or deer that you see before turning the dog loose. That way you might be able to cross that off the list, or find out what the dog has been doing.
If you get fresh snow cut him loose on it. tracks don't lie. After he strikes follow him and see what he's running.If you follow him a couple hundred yards and see he's tracks and they are online with a critters tracks for that far, chances are...
Have your vet check him for sore ears, tick borne diseases, and a thyroid panel. if he was treeing before, and suddenly stopped, it might be health.

Take him out in the daytime and try it. May not work though. Some dogs won't run off game in the daytime and will at night. But I'd try it and see what happens. If he is running a real track, and moving it forward and with some speed at least you know he can track. Might be like tar said, but more than likely he just needs to be told he can't run that kind of critters.
Saturday night my 3 year old rolled for about 10 minutes in something that stank to high haven , then he backed my coonhunting buddy 5 month old pup on a possum in the ground , got em off the possum and had to cut them off 2miles away off a heck of a deer race ,lol feburary in my part of the country can sure be tuff ,lol

I am just as guilty you can’t wait till coon season so you can put some fur in that young dog or pups mouth. Then when you have gotten all the easy ones there ain’t nothing left but the smart ones and dogs start not looking so good lol.

You remember we used to go to hunts and put up good scores in the same woods we hide hunted in lol. It’s really healthy for the coon population to take some.

Been with some comp dogs that struck track right off and keep it going until they treed. Never could tell the coons weren't there, if you listened to them. Is that the kind of hound you were talking about?

No I mean the the honest strike, drive the track one way accurate locator and stay put tree dog that had great coon sense and hunted the place out good and takes the tracks as they come to it. When other hunters say that Coons are very thin on non available that dog still gets it done.
