It has went from pack hounds raceing to find a first track. Then competing on that track raceing to be the first to find the tree the coon went up.
To independant hounds that hunt like dogs and will run till they get by them selves and strike a hot track and tree it before any other dog can get there. So they don't have to compete on a track.

.

Like many things we now do for sport and bragging rights, coonhunting started out as a way to feed the family.
Back in the old days our Grand Fathers and Grand Mothers used the meat for food and the furs to keep warm with. I am sure the indians did that also before them.
Just like them big bass we catch and put on the wall. They use to mount them in a frying pan. lol

EARLY EUROPEAN SETTLERS HARVESTED 'COONS FOR THE PELTS, MOSTLY BY TRAPPING, BUT CONSIDERING THE USE OF DOGS TO ASSIST HUNTERS HAD A LONGSTANDING HISTORY IN EUROPE, IT STOOD TO REASON THAT THE SAME PRACTICES WOULD TRANSFER TO THE 'NEW WORLD'!!!

I got a book on coons from the library. I can't remember the name or who it was buy. There isn't many of them though. Just do a search for it. It told the history of the population, the differant breeds of them here in the united states and gave a lot of great information on them. I wish I would had kept the book. The library had to order it from another library or I would of kept it and paid for it.
There are 4 differant breeds here in the states I beleive. They has the stats that showed when the population of coyotes go up the coon pop. goes down. Been that way since the first settlers came.
