Aggressiveness

How do you break your hunting buddies dog from jumping your dog while running a track and still remain friends.

I've always thought the concept of light broke was hilarious!! Dogs fightin like crazy, stopping periodically to see if lights are coming.. What could possibly be to gain??

I know of dog that is light broke on grinners. She will tree a few of them but you won't ever catch her under one.

Your hilarity over light broke dogs is derived from am obvious lack of experience. If you ever draw a dog that works at clearing the tree of any other dogs until it sees a light coming, then acts like a perfect gentilman, you would not find it a bit funny, certainly not hilarious.

I've seen them, true tree assassins. If there were not light broke then you would catch them pretty easy. The ones I have seen you have to get in with a light out to catch them. Obviously a dog that will not leave for them exposes what they are doing. The best one I seen was a dog being hunted local around here named Tiny. He would clear a tree as soon as the dog got there. You could hear a fight and if you went in with your light on all you would see was him up on the tree and the other dog getting after him. If you had never hunted with him you would think it was the other dog. We barred him and his handler from our club.

When you were a kid do you remember fighting with your brother and hearing your dad coming down the hall? That's called belt broke. Same principle.

growly dogs in the dog box...even dogs that bark in the box...I pull over and use a cattle prod on the hard headed ones...they learn to behave after a few times but I try to not leave them in the box unsupervised...

Aggressive Dogs

I wish you the best of luck with your book, especially the chapter on determining genetic aggression from man made. I personally have zero tolerance for it. I HATE aggressive dogs and have no time for school yard bullies as well. I broke one aggressive dog from being aggressive because it was a partnership dog in 45 years. It is not that I couldn't but I wouldn't.
Some of the historical best tree dog reproducers were aggressive in the past. It is a dominant trait genetically and will take a minimum of two generations to eliminate from a bloodline if one desires.
In my search for excellence I have been lied to by the most famous breeders in the past. Most are in denial and will never eliminate it from their bloodline because they first have to admit it to themselves.
Why would anyone want to waste time and money training and raising and promoting genetically aggressive dog only to have to repeat the process on the offspring? Pride of ownership causes a lot of kennel blindness. We have all had it. I wish there was a cure for it. A vaccination for kennel blindness would be like breaking a dog from aggressiveness. You are just avoiding the root cause! This is my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Ken Risley

Kler Kry...great post...

However, I do believe that a higher level of training would save dogs from having to be culled...years ago I also made the mistake of breeding one of my mt. cur females to a Busher bred mt cur with me knowing that he had aggression issues...my logic was that the Busher blood was about gone so I felt like I needed to breed to that dog and with properly selecting the right pups would solve that problem...almost every pup had aggression issues and none were kept...so yes I agree...aggression is a dominant trait...

I am a believer in breeding and selecting for natural ability...if you have to feed a ton of tracks you can expect to do the same with the offspring...if you have to spend extra time to break aggression then you can expect the same as well...

The extra training can be very beneficial to many dogs and dog owners that want a better hunting dog or pet but not to use these dogs in a breeding program...most of the time we know if it is man made or an inherent trait...

We as dog owners make mistakes when training so a higher level of knowledge would be very beneficial...some of these mistakes are man made.....i will post a few examples of man made problems that a dog will or can develop that we can eliminate by changing how we work with the pup on a day in and day out basis that prevents from ever creating it to begin with...

Reuben, I'm thinking if you use Willy's method on pups you will never see aggression. And you will have a good handling dog. Am I right , Willy?
