Hearing Aids

Anyone that's hard of hearing tried the inexpensive hearing aids you see on Amazon?

I see them on there from $29-$300, just wondering if they help?

Thanks for any feedback.

Hearing Aids

I got hearing aids n the last year. Didn't really think I needed them but my wife did. Turned out she was right. But I went ahead and spent the money for testing and for quality (I hope) aids. They have made a huge difference. But they weren't cheap. To answer your question I didn't try the cheaper ones. Might have been as good but having a specialist adjust them for you is the key.

If you just want to use the cheap ones hunting ok. But, you get what you pay for. I got them, went to Costco they were a third the price of a audiologist. Same hearing aids,

.

My question about them is DIRECTION. I have the high dollar ones that can be adjusted and I have one setting that is just for hunting. Works great, except when the frogs want to chime in. Anyway my biggest issue is with DIRECTION. Seems, I think the dogs might be one direction and they are really in another direction. Anyone else have this problem?

Bruce in order to tell direction you have to hear in stereo or both ears equally. If one is off it messes with your direction.

Got my 1st aid in 1985-- only 1 as that was all I could afford-- like Jerry said above it will affect direction unless they are balanced
it was a "Miracle ear. LOL! yes that is a decent brand but you pay for a franchise fee plus a lot of clear blue sky.
the next I got was a pair of hearing aids from Mid America Hearing Center at Mt Vernon MO.($195 each)
the cost for the pair was less than the 1 Miracle Ear.. and they made them that day and it was a real improvement--- you must understand this was back before the days of programmable digital ones..

had several different ones since then.. .I have had
several different brands..--Electone ,Sonatone,Resound and the current ones I have are Widex (for the last 6 years) they are programmable digital, I bought a bluetooth and a TV link with them-- Costly the bluetooth allows me to use my cell phone Very Well!!!
the TV link( TVDEX) I can hear the music on the TV.-- these have lasted far longer than the cheaper brands.
I just got back from the Ear,nose and throat Dr.
they turned them up to the top of this model--- when these fail I ma looking at stronger ones..

Sams club has Lucid technologies for about $2400 for a pair plus $200 for the bluetooth and order a TV link for$69.00
the new ones thru the audio Dr will run $3900 plus $200 for the ear molds and the TV link is $200 more. But if your hearing is not as profound as mine you just might be able to do better at Sams club or Costco--- My brother in law got his H aids for about 875 each at Costco..

the sad truth is there are only about 6-8 companies that make all the components for hearing aids.

again to be able to hear directional, your ears must be balanced.
I know one fellow that has bad loss in one ear and he can hear good out of the other - his solution was to get a Garmin Astro so he could tell where the hounds treed.

Indiana has a state program Called Vocational Rehabilitation Services. This program can be googled. I am sure other states has similar programs. Basically its a non advertised state benefit. If you pay taxes the state of INdiana will pay for from the beginning to the end and everything in between a pair of top of the line hearing aids. I have helped half dozen men get this state benefit. It doesn't matter how much money you make. You will sign a contract stating that you will continue for the next 1 year pay Indiana taxes basically that you will be employed. You must be employed now to receive this state benefit.
I wear hearing aids for years directionality been all over the place. I now wear a cochlear implant, I am still off on directionality but can hear awesome.

Direction

Bruce before I got my hearing aids (Widex from private professional) I had trouble with direction. When My Dog and my buddies dog treed together it sounded like they were apart to me. His dog always to the left and mine to the right. I think it was because the tone of his dog was one that my left ear heard and my dog was a tone my right ear heard. As we would walk to them I would keep saying there split until I got about 50 yards from them. With my hearing aids don't seem to have that problem and I can hear the dogs further. Problem is I'm worried about loosing one out hunting.

Hearing aids

Ive tried Miricale ear, the best Walker Game ear,, Even went to a ear doc was fited and fixed up with a $5800.00 set of digital with a 60 day trial,They wouldn't stay tuned , I was at his office every other week getting them tuned ,My trial was almost up ,I gave them back because they wouldn't stayed tuned . I'm going to do the Cochlear Implant in may.. but what I found better than any hearing aid no matter what the price, I can tell direction also ,,, and that is a ear amplifier from Wallgreens for $39.95 with a good pair of ear buds I can hear the dogs when they get out of pocket. I also use it for coyote huntin I can hear the race for a long ways last weekend I could hear the coyote hounds and my Garmin said right at 3 miles .. The amplifier isn't a cure but it sure lets ya listen to the dogs and enjoy a good race ,, I hope this helps yas ,,because it did me ,,have a blessed one ,,,Ron

.

They sure do Roy. But I grew up trusting my own senses over everything else. I trusted the stars over a compass. I just hate not being able to trust my ears over a Garmin. lol

I have worn hearing aids since 1997 my problem is i have such a flowing mane of hair that when I sweat they get wet and shut off makes it tough. Actually I dont have much hair which makes it worse I started wearing a head band which helps. I have a setting on mine that helps hear the hounds
If the wind is blowing hard might as well forget it if they get very deep,I also have problems with direction at times and having one hearing aid shut off which really throws you off. They make water proof ones now which will be the next ones I try once i wear out what I have ,I am on my third pair since 97 so will be a while

My husband got his through the VA. $6K and they are great, can be tuned through his iPhone.

The audiologist says the most common problem people report when asking for new ones - "my dog ate 'em!"

LOL! that Happens.
We were visiting some friends in Wisconsin a few years back ( before I got the Widex with the Bluetooth)
the hearing aids I had then would squeal like a pig when answering a phone.. so I took the right one out and laid it on the table.. this little fluffy house "dog" sure did a number on mine.. I took the pieces to the audiologist-- no hope- $$$
