Brucellosis and Breeding ????

How much of a realistic threat is brucellosis to males used for breeding ???

Enough to get them tested. Why wouldn't you want to protect your stock? If they are worth breeding, they are worth a $50 blood draw.

I don’t know how widespread it is. But the test is cheap so why would a person want to risk it.

The last time I took my female in to get her a brucellosis test my vet kind of laughed and said, "I don't know what all problems this would cause if she tested positive. Missouri is a brucellosis free state and this would probably cause all sorts of problems at livestock sales etc. if she tested positive."

I told him many coon dog stud owners were still asking for one but I hadn't heard of any testing positive in many years. He didn't seem to think the test was necessary but I don't really know.

There has been some interest by some to breed to a male I have. I have required a brucellosis test, and the first man got upset. I agree that it is better to be safe than sorry. I have never heard of a female testing positive, but it's kind of like a dog getting run over by a car...…..it only takes one.

I think it's more wide spread then people think. Up here in Canada a couple months back a puppy mill got busted and 600 ish dog where out down cause they had all had it and the same owner had quite a few more properties and barns full of dogs. The 600 dogs put down was just one building!!

Let Gene Hicks tell you about how rough it is to watch one die from it.
