What do y’all do for pressure sores? I’m 65 and this is the first one I’ve had that has ever had them enough to be considered with. They are on the lower boney parts of the leg. She’s on clean dirt with grass runs. I’ve used hay, rubber mats, dog pillows, you name it for bedding and it makes no difference.

Sometimes theses “pressure sores” aren’t pressure sores at all. Determining the root cause can be difficult. They can initially be caused by several things. Could have started as insect bite, briars, allergies, bacterial infection,etc.

As I’m sure you know, animals instinctively lick their wounds or sores which often can aid the healing process. However, it can also damage the skin and keep it from healing. I’ve read that when animals lick their wounds it releases endorphins which actually makes them feel better yet it can be damaging to the skin and delay healing.

Vets will at times prescribe steroids which can be administered in several ways, i.e. injections, oral meds and topical meds applied directly to the affected area.

If you’ve exhausted all the things you know could be causing it I’d take the dog to the vet. Sometimes our “home” remedies don’t help and can actually aggravate the issue making the healing process even longer.

Putting a dog box mat in our old dog Mafia helped his immensely and more than anything. I wish I had thought of it years before he died this past Jan at 13. In the wintertime he had straw on top of the mat (make sure it stays dry remove anytime it gets damp) and when it got warm we'd clean out his house down to just the mat. I also mixed up my own NuStock using sulfur, coconut oil and olive oil instead of the traditional mineral oil found in the off the shelf product. This stuff works on just about any secondary infection from staph to fungal infections.
