I thought it would be worth bringing this thread to the front...
As a kid I hunted the female every day until the day she didn't want to go because she was about to drop the pups...not only that but her food ration was rabbits we caught daily...the pups we kept were awesome hunting dogs the same as the mama dog I had them follow me starting at 10 weeks or so...the sire hunted daily and was a strike dog but mostly the catch dog...the female was a top strike dog but didn't catch as many on account she wasn't quite as fast as a rabbit...

My dogs caught all game they could including snakes, feral cats etc...and rabbits daily on account that was their main food source...

I now believe the pups were natural hunting dogs due to epigenetics and the daily hunts...part of the epigenetics also because sire and dam ate raw rabbit daily intestines and all...

One other thing...a kid connects better with the dog pack...I truly believe that...

I've tried it both ways several times over the years. Never could prove it helped the pups make better dogs but it did help keep the females in shape.

Exercise is part of any healthy pregnancy human or animal. Be mindful of heat and hydration and use common since on the duration of hunts. Towards the end of pregnancy exercise does not need to include hunting but even a good walk can be beneficial. Healthy diet, exercise, healthy starting weight, being free of parasites and an increase of caloric intake throughout pregnancy and while nursing will all increase your chances of a healthy litter of puppies and insure their proper brain along with physical development.

in rough country you take a chance of one of tits getting torn and just a small tear will rip open and cause problem when the pups start sucking.i have seen just a small scratch cause big problems. around the 60th day i stop hunting .

I hunt them up until they can't jump up in the Jeep by themselves. Overweight females can have problems birthing pups.
