Try cooking up some cheap hamburger for these finicky dogs and add in some Gerber's Baby Food Chicken or Turkey for flavoring. You can also cook up chicken and save the broth for flavoring. You can pour the broth over the dry food after awhile to get them back on dry food.

Hey Wayne,
The two areas I see this most commonly is in areas where there are foxtails or things like rose spines that can get under the skin and irritate them. Drawing agents like drawing creams can work for these as well as soaking their feet in epsom salts. Many need to be removed under anesthesia.

The other place I see these are with dogs who have atopic dermatitis. This is an allergy that effects the feet and legs, under arms and groin of many dogs. It can lead to blisters on the dogs feet. These dogs do well with local cortisone creams or powders applied twice daily to the areas affected or systemic cortisone type treatments. There are also some newer products for treating atopic dermatitis like CADI injectable and Apoquel but these can be expensive for most coonhunters.

Benign growths are common on the feet of dogs as well as tumors. These can be serious and should be examined by your vet if you notice masses on the feet of dogs you suspect to be a tumor. They tend to be aggressive type tumors and should be removed ASAP!

I'd start with the soaking of the feet in Epsom salts followed with drawing cream if you think there is something in there , or just hydrocortisone creams or oinments or seeing your vet for other systemics.

I think we are seeing an increase in upper respiratory infections caused by viruses that lead to more advanced inflammation. Illinois is a breeding ground for canine influenza virus, which can be more harsh on the lungs and respiratory system and last much longer than simple kennel cough bacteria or viruses.

Might be time to look into vaccination against these canine influenza viruses if these dogs are going to be going into these areas for competition hunting.

I don't recommend it unless you've had the dogs tested and your veterinarian recommends it. Most good commercial dog foods have plenty of iodine and over supplementation can be bad. I know Science Diet and Prescription Diets have been praised for their use of a more available / usable iodine source than other companies. I've never had an issue with either Eukanuba or Pro Plan diets. I think most thyroid issues in coonhounds are genetic based or secondary to tick born infections.

Doc thanks I took him to the vet .He said it was white blood cells which indicated to him that there may be a foreign object in his foot . He said it would work its way out and prescribed 8 days of antibiotic . Dog still acts fine , no pain no licking it , walks and runs good . Ill give this a try . Thanks again , Wayne

Doc, I gave a friend of mine the pick of the litter male. He took him to a vet to remove his dew claws.

The vet neutered him without permission and he's only 3 months old.

Way too young for that.

What we need to know is do we need to give him testosterone or something to make him mature mentally and physically, get a grown dog voice etc?

I doubt it. Most of the puppies coming from the shelter are neutered at a young age with no long term issues to the males. He may not have the large skull and bone structure of his littermates but he should mature normally.

I'm interested in his drive level as he matures. The old times always said a neutered hunting dog is as good as a house dog. I'm sure it's individual variation and some may actually benefit from it to remove aggression issues.

Follow up: Took him to another vet...bloodwork again with x-rays this time and didnt find anything so put him on i/d diet. Kept throwing up every day and finally quit eating all together. Took him back and they run a barium test with no negative results. They did exploratory surgery and found a ulcer...$$$

Explain to me the swelling. Is it generalized swelling of the entire joint area or just a small area of skin that is swollen? if it is the joint that is swollen, it could be arthritis that is flaring up and loss of hair from licking at the joint and from laying on his abdomen. Also check to see if the joints are warm to touch where it is swollen. Is his temp higher than normal. Get a digital thermometer and check his temp a few times a day , morning and night. Wouldn't hurt to give him a dose of Simparica or Bravecto to rule out mites too.

Wow that is not very common. Usually see ulcers from medications like NSAIDS ie. Aspirin, Previcox, Deramaxx, Rimadyl, Metacam etc.. Any ideas on the cause?

Sorry to hear this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Wayne,
The two areas I see this most commonly is in areas where there are foxtails or things like rose spines that can get under the skin and irritate them.

Doc

Doc thanks I took him to the vet .He said it was white blood cells which indicated to him that there may be a foreign object in his foot . He said it would work its way out and prescribed 8 days of antibiotic . Dog still acts fine , no pain no licking it , walks and runs good . Ill give this a try . Thanks again , Wayne

Hey Wayne, try some drawing agents too if there is an opening. Epsom Salt soaks work good as well as drawing creams.

Doc I have a sick one right now. Took him to my local vet 2 weeks ago. Did blood work and it came back faint positive for erylica. Started on doxycycline 2.5 pills twice a day. Took him back for a follow up yesterday and he cut the doxy back to once a day and predizone 2 pills once a day for a week . The doxy I'm suppose to give for 2 more weeks to make a full month. He seems to be better but his mouth is still hoarse does that sound like how I should be medicating him or would you treat differently ? Thanks for all you are doing for hunters and hounds.

That's not the first time I've seen this actually. MSM can cause gastric inflammation in dogs. Check to make sure that bottle doesn't have a natural form of Aspirin in it too. There are getting to be a lot of those on the market now. Willow Bark or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) would be other forms of it.

DR HALLADA

GOT A QUESTION ABOUT DOGFOOD THAT PEOPLE SAY ISNT VERY GOOD DOG FOOD.CAN A PERSON USE A CHEAPER DOG FOOD LIKE MAYBE {OLE ROY HIPRO] MAYBE EVEN CORN BASED FOOD. AND SUPPLIMENT THERE DOGS WITH A GOOD VITAMIN PLUS OTHER THINGS LIKE A SPOON FULL OF WHEATGERM OR FISH OIL OR ANYTHING THAT UPS THE PROTIEN OR FAT CONTENT AT EVERY MEAL WHEN YOU FEED THEM DAILEY. WOULD THAT MAKE THE USE OF CHEAPER DOG FOOD MORE COST EFFECTIVE AND BE GOOD FOR THE DOG ALSO.AND MAKE THE DOGFOOD BETTER WITH THESE ADDITIVES ADDED TO IT... THANKS AND HAVE A BLESSED ONE ,,,RON

Ron, the biggest problems I see with dog foods isn't under nutrition, it's over nutrition. Nutritional imbalances are the biggest problems I've faced as a veterinarian. It's hard to take a cheap diet that is probably already over fortified with calcium, phosphorus, and other vit/min and then try to make that diet balanced by adding more to it. You can definitely add fat to make up for lack of energy in a diet, but you can't make up for high levels of vit/min in a poorly regulated food. I've never had much luck using cheap foods like this and then trying to supplement it to make up the difference or make it balanced. It just doesn't work.

Purina Dog Chow would be the cheapest I'd go and if you need to add energy , supplement it with meat scraps, cheap hamburger, vegetable oil or other sources of fat. I like the cheap hamburger because you get a good protein source as well as fat. Dog Chow is a well balanced diet when it comes to vit/min content.

Hope that helps.
Doc

I've received 2 or 3 PMs this week from people asking questions about dogs and I'm not able to reply because your mailboxes are full.

Keep the questions here so I can respond to them easily and don't have to deal with the mailbox issue.

Thanks
Doc

Doc

I have a year old that was a very hard going dog alone didn't come back very accurate. Over a period of a few weeks he started not hunting good and just falling treed slick and half hearted treeing. Took him to vet and Ehrlichia. Treated 30 days with doxycycline and gave the two imizol shots. Finished treatment this week and took him hunting last night and same thing. What would you suggest to try next?
