If anyone was trying to reach me by PM my mailbox is now empty.

Just an update:

Lyme disease:

We've been treating a few chronic Lyme dogs with a combination of antibiotics and immune stimulants and so far we are 100% successful. New research in the human field has revealed ways to get antibiotics into the central nervous system and effectively kill Borellia B, the causitive agent of Lyme Disease. I'll post more info on that later. So far these dogs are fully recovering and are gaining weight. We will soon see if they return to full hunting potential.

Ehrlichia:

We are having good results treating Ehrlichia with a combination of Imizol and Doxycycline. The Imizol is given 2 weeks apart in two doses under the skin by your vet. The Doxy is dosed at 100mg twice daily orally for 30-60 days. Even dogs that have been previously treated for Ehrlichia are responding to this combo.

Flea/Tick Prevention:

I am recommending a combination of Simparica or Bravecto as a systemic product and Soresto or Permethrin Spray as a topical product as a repellent. It's so inexpensive now to spray these dogs down with Permethrin spray prior to cutting them loose. Just buy some Martins 10% Permethrin spray and dilute it 1oz to a gallon of water and apply a light mist over the dog prior to cutting loose. You can also spray your clothes with this same formula and let the clothes dry on the cloths line prior to putting them on. I usually spray my chaps or gators as well before heading out.

Stay safe everyone! The ticks are out!

Doc

Hey Dr. Hallada,

I currently have my coon dogs wearing the seresto collar. Is it okay to spray them with permethrin before hunting them? I have been considering purchasing simparica for them too. I have a 57 pound female (5 years old) and a 33 pound female (5 months old and will weigh more soon). The 57 pound female tested positive and was treated for ehrlichiosis and Lyme's disease in January. Will you send me the price for the 88-132 dose and information on how to order them from you? Cutting the larger dose in half seems like the most cost effective method for me to treat them. I also have a 8 month old dachshund that weighs approximately 10 lbs wearing a seresto collar. I have been reading this thread and have become worried about the side effects found in smaller dogs. Would you recommend removing his collar and switching to simparica?

Thank you,
Matt Wilkins

Yes I would use Simparica in the smaller dogs for sure. I use Simparica along with Seresto collars on two of my hunting dogs. I PM'd you.
I wouldn't use the Permethrin spray with the Seresto collars. It already has a Permethrin type product in the collar along with Advantage. Permethrin is the toxic part of that collar. Advantage is pretty safe even at high doses.

Heart worms and Ivomec

Doc I have been reading on here about Ivomec not being effective any longer for prevention of Heart Worms. Is this correct and if so what's the best treatment for prevention. Thank you for always helping educate us on how to care for our dogs.

I know this post is old but the topic is more relevant today than ever. Ivermectin resistant heartworm disease is real and it's created a major problem in preventing heartworm disease.

One of the newest preventions for heartworm disease is Proheart 12 which is an injectable heartworm preventative that lasts 12 months now. The same wormer (Moxidectin) used in Proheart 12 has been added to Simparica to make Simparica Trio, a once a month oral tablet for flea, tick, heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and lungworm prevention.

Ask your vet about these new preventatives.

Simparica Trio

Hello Doc,

Do you know of any any side effect from using Simparica Trio and Advantix II at the same time?

The Mosquitoes and flies are bad in South GA and the advantix II keeps them off the dogs along with the ticks and fleas

Right know I am using Ivermectin and Advantix II on the first day of the month and using Panacure on the 15th of the month.

Thank You for you reply in advance

Flea and Tick Prevention

What can I use for flea and ticks on a pup that is under 12 weeks old? Seems like everything I see says for dogs over 12 weeks old.

Another question for Dr. Halada what can I use for my puppy that is constipated? She is only going once a day and it's small and hard and sometimes she whines when she is going. I'm feeding her purina puppy chow healthy start nutrition. My kids feed her no telling what when I'm gone to work and she is with my wife and kids, I know alot of human food can constipate them any advice would be of great help.

Dogs mouth

Dr. Hallada my 5 year old male dogs mouth became very soft in December 2019. He went through yeast infection both ears, no improvemen, then in May 2020 had his tonsils removed, since it is hot in Oklahoma I only hunted him 1every week, his mouth still seems strained, some nights hear him 8-900 yrd. Still only about 60 percent to normal, is there any medication to help build his voice strength? Thanks in advance

Re: Flea and Tick Prevention

Vinegar, 1 pint, , 2 pints water and two table spoons of table salt. It works, cheap and very safe for puppies. Just spray it on.
