I also, agree that a dog will get better with more experience or hunting. What I am saying is a dog will never exceed their ability no matter how much they are hunted. Making excuses for a dog by saying it needs hunted up is just that a excuse for poor ability. We are not talking about pups or dogs that have not been hunted or given the proper chance. The really talented dogs do not need to be hunted up to look good. Dogs that have to be hunted all the time to tree coons are culls in my opinion. To use your analogy of basketball player no amount of practice or playing will make a average player be as good as a Michael Jordan, it's about natural talent or ability not playing time or hunting time. Dave I agree that being laid up should not make a dog back up. A coon dog should be able to go tree coon if only hunted 4 times a year but when I have a young dog, as I always seem to do, I hunt thru the summer just to get him as far along as I can. But yes I smile when I see "needs to be hunted up" and just figure the dog has never done much but they're hoping some day he will.
