.

I rate them in this manner and my rating system is based upon the following.
It is based upon the criteria that the owner knows nothing about training a coonhound. In other words with what breed of dog do you stand a better chance of getting one that will tree a coon in spite of the owners inexperience or wrong handling. That is where the game is lost or won--The environment the pup is placed in.

1. Walker
2. English
3. Blue or Black dog
4. Redbone
5. Plott

Also if you would happen to agree with that list, notice one thing. The more restrictive the breeding is due to color the lower down the list the dog is.

Great thing is the coonhound world is blessed with many very good dogs from all breeds and those dogs keep their owners happy, which is all that counts.

I pleasure hunt only but this is my list.

Redbone - best I ever owned
B&T - love to hear them
Plott - easy to train but hate to ruin a good bear dog
Bluetick - my second best owned but had a lot of culls
Leopard - had a lot of culls but love the color
English - Never had but a couple and they were culls
Cur - never had a good one
Fiest - just prefer hounds
cross breed - never owned one

walkers - never saw a good one

mtn.cur or a short eared mixed up hound, that says very little on track if any and dont have to be a hard tree dog but he must have the meat when he trees.

My Favorites
1.WALKERS
2.ENGLISH
The rest of the breeds I have seen very few of and they weren't impressive.

So Ive hunted with quite a few more dogs of all breeds since I first posted on here about a year ago so I have a slightly different opinion now:

1. Walker
2. English
3. Plott
4. Redbone
5. Bluetick
6. Leapord
7. Wayyyyyyyy down at the bottom of the list, B&T.

That's for coon. If we're talkin about bear dogs then reverse numbers 2 and 3.
