I definitely wasn't a natural. It was always learned with each hound.
Some are easier than others. Mostly just time spent both alone and hunted with others. Some dogs actually sound fairly different in both of those scenarios even.
In time I had the epiphany that the problem wasn't so much I couldn't tell the difference between dogs as much as it was I could detect even minute difference in the same dog. That lead to greater understanding of what the difference ment.
I remember a hunt in Clinton Missouri where Steve Mackey and I drew out together. Steve's dog treed and the clock was running. My dog was there, but barking in not up. I let the clock run out, much to Steve's ire.
When we got to the tree, Steve's dog was in fact treed. Probably 3 feet away, mine was barking in a hole. Steve's dog had a sow and litter in a dead elm or oak... mine had a single kitten coon in the hole.
That's when you know you understand the dog. Both handlers in this case.
