Nestle Purina PetCare, in conjunction with the United Kennel Club, established the Purina Award for the Outstanding UKC Nite Hunt Coonhound of the Year.

Purina recognizes the immense interest in the sport of Coonhound Nite Hunt competition and the tremendous amount of time spent by competitors in working with and training their dogs. The Purina Outstanding UKC Nite Hunt Award was established to honor the country’s outstanding coonhound and give recognition to the owner and handler.


Maybe just change the above statement to fit the format. Nothing about breeds here or where you live as a stipulation of whether you are a contender for this award. When dogs with 60 pts that won a WC can't go and those with 10 can I would no longer count this statement to be true. And if it was put in to increase participation many of those who have hunted in (participated) and won more are eliminated because of location or breed. The format has the appearance of eliminating stiff competition for breeds with less numbers and wins to be favored for tickets to go rather than inviting those who have truly been outstanding throughout the year a shot an additional title. It's not just Walkers that are knocked out by there other breeds as well. I've just used Willy a Walker as a prime example.
Under the current format yes numbers should be up 112 dogs will earn spots as opposed to the 64.

Oh my goodness, I just got my Bloodlines Magazine. First, what a cool cover photo.
The Purina National Hunt will have an $24,,400 prize package. Overall wnner will get a $7,160 prize package. Breed winners will each get a $2,200 prize package.
Now that is a hunt. It is no wonder that the owners of those 5th place dogs want to go.
Jen, it looks like Gary Starns is the walker breed rep. And he is your neighbor from Ada, Oklahoma. Have you called him? The rules say that the Purina Committee can change things at any time.
I can't wait for the last weekend in April.

Jen, they came up with the Regions Format because some regions have more hunts and therefore more chances to win points. I think Tarbaby suggested that change. In years past handlers had to travel all over the country to run the race. Now they have to only travel within their region. And historically, the Purina Race has always had individual Breed winners and no one has complained. Imagine that, after 40 years someone complains that a poor Redbone is going to win some money.

Hunt is in April. They have been having it in Illinois idk about this year. All those that are in the top of their breed/region will get a letter with the info and how to reserve their entry.

Why not issue a personal challenge to the dog that wins the Outstanding award to challenge the dog with 600% more points to a huntoff to see which one is Outstanding regardless of breed or color?

Here is a news flash for you. There are Blueticks, English, Black and Tans and Walkers who have 30 or more points that are eliminated from attending this hunt by the format though Redbones, Plott and American Leopards are getting a free pass with their 10-30 points. You tell me who this special treatment is going to. As I have said before this has nothing to do with Walkers my point with the World Champion not getting a ticket was to show how the format no longer fits the title or prestige of the hunt. The #2 dog Secrets is just icing on the cake of the biased format it shouldn't matter what breed they are.
Wow a dog won one hunt and gets a invite to Purina Nationals, I would be so proud especially knowing that some that won six are staying home lol.

I understand what they are trying to do some of the other breeds have become stagnet at competing at the higher levels. But do I think you should give them pretty much a free pass to get there no !! Qualifying all one breed hunts would be a good start then the cream would rise to the top.

Complain, complain, bicker, bicker, bicker...sour grapes, blah, blah, blah... I guess that if my dog wasn't qualified to hunt, I would be complaining too. But I sure wouldn't be running down the dogs that did get qualified. And I wouldn't be running down the hunt either.
Sometimes we can only see a situation and how it affects us. We don't see the "big picture" or how it affects everyone. UKC has to consider all coonhunters and breeds, not just the walker dog people. Walker dog people sometimes tend to think that they are the only guys with coonhounds and everyone else should bow down and get out of their way.

I ain't running it down brother your the one came up with the idea of all one breed qualifying hunts. I think that would get more participation from the other breeds. I don't know why the other breeds don't chase the competition circuit like the walkers. There has got to be top dogs in the other breeds out there somwhere. Got to figure out a way to make them show up I am all ears !!
