Youth

Oh my goodness, everyone talks about getting kids to coon hunt... I just saw where 71 kids hunted last night at a PKC Youth Hunt. Now that is a bunch of kids. How in the world did they get that many kids to show up? Maybe there are some lessons to be learned here.

Jen, my math was never that good. I saw the Cummins name was there. It didn't pay that much. There were not that many winners and their parents spent a lot more than they will win. If it was just about the money, the parents would come out way ahead just to give their youth the money and stay home.

It has to be about something else and maybe we should figure out what that something is. Maybe it is the smiles on those kids faces. And someone should ask the losers why they showed up. We might also ask the parents why they spent all of that money and took the time to haul their kids to Salem. That might be the key.

We know Tayzen he is from Oklahoma but as far as we know he isn't related good kid and a good handler though.
When we held UKC Nationals here a few years on Friday night we hunted I believe 70 some dogs.
Our Pkc club has 2 youth there competing this year. One we sent one expenses paid and another with a little $ in his pocket to help out. Jed's club that has a youth series also paid for a trip for at least one youth. Texas runs a breaking curfew series where several got qualified to go. It is one of those build it and they will come kind of things. It may take a while but clubs need to do their part and fellow hunters theirs.
I look at "kids" like Dalton and Lane this years UKC world champ, who also won the PKC Youth World Championship, it wasn't that long ago they were amongst my youth hunters. At 10 years old Braxton Wills one of our local youth has hunted in more casts this year than most grown men.
Nurture it and give them goals to compete for. These kids this weekend all had to compete to earn their ticket to go then receive an entry invitation in the mail, they can't just show up and hunt. Just with that should tell you the actual numbers these of these kids is way higher than the 82 that were there last night.

Both the winners from Jeds two hunts are there. Ryder Allen won the all expenses paid trip. Paige Grooms is there as well as several others that took part in the youth challenges. Dane Blessing, Beau Triplet, Johnathan Thompson and others.

The bottom line is that the PKC youth program is simply better than the UKC youth program. More youth hunts with more to do at them, a youth world hunt, and clubs like yours that focus on youth events more than most.

"Nurture" and "goals". I am sure that those are 2 of the key factors. Almost all of those kids have been working and planning all year to get to go to Salem this week. My math is not that good but it looks to me like about 100 kids showed up to hunt. Maybe every UKC club should sponsor one youth to go to UKC Youth World. Each club could decide how to pick their Youth but a series of Youth hunts sounds like a great idea. Or maybe UKC could have Youth qualifier hunts.

Thanks for posting. Garrett was one excited little boy last night. Cash was sitting at 150+ and the leader had 200+ both had split treed with Coons, the other dog having 100 strike and cash having 50 strike give the other dog the lead. We walked to split trees all night with all the dogs. Another boy treed again his dog in the direction of cash at nearly 600 yards so Garrett then treed in for 25 with 3 minutes left in the hunt not knowing if they were split or not. Well we walked in and the only dog around was Cash sitting under a coon in the first fork. So Garrett and cash won with no time left, shining the last tree. It was sure a nail biter!! That’s the way all the cast have been down here. Nearly all of them coming down to the last tree. We had a great time here in Salem. They treated us to a banquet and dinner, the kids all got sweatshirts and hats, and also a $30 dollar gift card to spend at any of the venders set up down here in Salem.

Kudos to you and all the other parents out there that take the time and money to put your kids first hauling them around to these hunts. I will never forget the site of when I awarded Garrett with that 50lb bag of feed at Miami and he was insistent on carrying it himself. It was bigger than him lol. Good luck tonight.

A great event no matter who is hosting it..The youth need unity and our sport needs unity to survive..It has been a great weekend up here..The final four in the younger division is outside playing touch football as we speak..Nice to see kids having a blast..Congrats to all the young people and the parents who take the time to make this happen!!

Nothing like a game of football to get warmed up before you turn the dogs loose and walk all night.
