i have a 30 m0. old hound been on heart worm preventive since he was seven mo. no symptoms at all. plenty of go. but he has been tested by 2 different vets.my local vet recommends slow kill.other vets that i have talked say the shots.the slow kill is cheaper but the money is not the issue. just want him cleaned up.

I am in the same situation and I choose the shots. Mine has Lymes also on top of the heart worms so I choose the shots because the first 30 days treatment is doxycycline. Figured it would most likely treat both situations. She'll be done in 90 days and hopefully back to the woods by then. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Not sure where euthenasia comes into play, but I would go with the shots personally if the dog is strong and can handle it. I've seen dogs recover from the shots and be good as new in a couple months, but recovery can be a little rough. If the dog is not in great shape (and might not be depending on the lyme's situation) I would go slow kill (on the worms, not the dog haha). But that's just my personal opinion and I'm certainly not a vet, just what I would do with my own dog. Been lucky that ivomec has kept my dogs clean, fingers crossed that continues.

vet will inject your dog with melarsomine , a fancy name for arsenic if you would review the affects of arsenic you will find that your dog will not be the same ,not to mention the pain the animal endures during treatment . if your vet disagrees with this maybe you should be seeking a new vet .i have dealt with this several times and i have personal experience ,it's ok to consult your vet but remember what works for a lap dog may not be the answer for a coonhound and all vet didnt grad.in the top of the class

I've used both methods and had great results. Saw no side effects of either.

well I talked to 4 different vets 3 said injection 1 slow kill.3 injections are recommended but because my dog is in good shape and has no symptoms my vet says she is sure 2 shots should clear him up. he has been on antibiotics Monday will make 30days he will have 2 shots in 24 hrs. then 30 day kennel rest.this dog has been on nexgard spectra since he was seven mo.old.i called the company they said because it was not approved in the u.s. they would not stand behind it.so im looking for another prevention.thanks ever one for your input.

How bad are the heart worms? The arsenic treatments work. The key is to let the dog rest and stay as calm as possible. Dont rush them after treatments and when you do get them back out do not push them. let them acclimate again. Depending on severity of infection dog may be out of comission for several months. The dog can get back to doing his thing after treatmentS.

He seems to be in good shape vet said I could hunt him while he ie on his antibiotics goes hard with no symptoms
