Just lead him/her away from tree with no praise and no fur when it trees a Grinner or any other off game. Praise the heck out of him/her for treeing a coon and shoot it out or carry a drag with coon scent and reward it for doing a good job. After the dog knows good and well what it is supposed to be after and will stay treed awhile on coon you can verbally scold it for treeing off game. Shock collar in the yard can be a good way to break young dogs of off game. Leave the shock collar at home when you hunt it at night so you do not put a fear of failure mentality into the dog. You could set it back or ruin it by incorrect association with an untimely shock from collar. After your dog knows that you are only after coon it will leave the opossums alone. If it continues to be a problem as the dog matures.....get more firm with reinforcement.

Thanks

BIGWOODCNDAWGS I appreciate you taking time to try and help me out I think I'm doing well with this pup he trees his first wild coon at a year old but he seems to like his opossum also last time out he went 400+ yards and seems like he lost the track but picked it back up but that time he had a opossum I think he just needs lots of wood time and thanks again

don't praise him

don't praise him for possums but don't slap him around at this point. let him get to treeing some coons praise him and knock them out and quick enough he should quit on his own. If not way down the road a little training may be in order. but at least he wants to tree, be happy about that. an old timer I've hunted with would say if they can tree a possum they can tree a coon, but if they never tree you won't ever tree a coon.
