What killed the mule?

Mule was alive & in good shape, healthly, alert, no problems on Thursday night. Friday morning about 11 am mule was dead. Neck was ripped apart, partly eat & the side of its head was torn open & brains eat out. Eyeballs were plucked out, but a bird could have done that later. There was some dog, coyote, or maybe big cat tracks nearby, but only one set. Seems like if it was a predator, it would have eat more,( guts & hind quarters). He had put salt in pasture on Thursday & it was all gone on Friday. 1 mule & 2 horses in pasture. Could mule have eat the salt & died, then something tore in its neck? Looks like a purty big struggle took place. Nothing has been back to finish the meal. What ya'll think? Thanks

Anybody got any Bulldogs running loose. We had an American bulldog that killed a horse one time.

This is what I'd be thinking. Pitbulls or such in the area.

What's the chances that one of the horses in the field with it kicked it???? Maybe the damage you are seeing was after it was killed. Not too many animals out there can safely tangle with a mule, much less kill one. We have livestock and have had several attacks over the years. Dog like animals always attack the hind quarters first to weaken their prey and wear it down, then they will first eat the tongue then the guts, just like wolves.
On the other hand, throat ripped up makes me think of something killing just for the fun of it. Kind of like the way house dogs will kill sheep and goats. They aint hungry or threatened, but we have lost several sheep and goats and a horse to house dogs. Neither time the dogs bothered to actually feed on the animal once they killed it.
We had something happen a few months back with a horse. Except what ever happened didn't kill it outright. We found the horse the next morning with a severe gash like 2 feet long from its front shoulder all the way down its side, so deep you could see the horses lung and hear the air sucking in when it breathed.
We looked all over the field it was in and couldn't find any thing {like a sharp object it could have ran into} that we thought could have done this...lacking grizzly bears in this state we never figured it out. It looked like somebody tried to kill this horse with a very large machete.
Unless that mule was already weak or sick, from what I have seen, not too many animals are a match...I have to doubt a black bear or a mountain lion would even try a mule.

There was not any thunderstorms in the area at the time. Its my hunting buddies mule, and he thinks the salt might have some to do with it. I have mules & horses too, but never had one to eat salt like that. He has probly 400 or more head of cattle on the same farm and not many dogs running loose. I think dogs did it, but only 1 set of medium size tracks in the sand along the creek. You can tell there was a struggle. It happened in the woods near the creek and the dirt & leaves are all messed up. Seems like it would take more than 1 dog to kill a mule. Have been several black bear seen lately, but I don't think a bear did it.

Is it possible the signs of a struggle you are seeing could be from it thrashing about while it was died from natural causes? Then eaten on by something?

If it was dogs it would have taken several of them to kill a mule. Also he would of had a lot of damage to his hind quarters.

Yea it could be. He did a lot of thrashing though. Culd be he ate all the salt, then went to the creek and died, then some thing tore it up. But I have never seen one eat that much salt. I use salt or mineral blocks, not fine salt.

Thanks Mike, I like reading your mountain man stuff.

Highly unlikely that the salt caused it, never ever heard of salt hurting a horse or a mule, mules unlike horses won't flounder.

not sure what part od S.C you are from, but if close to the southeast part of GA, you said it was by a creek? Big hole torn in it? Could it have been a large gator? They would not hesitate to take on something way larger than them. Most times they kill, tear away parts of it, and take it into water to let rot before eating.
