DR. AHallada Split nails

What causes a hounds nails to split on the bottom side? They are on cement floors and are not pen stale. Well fed with Victor dog food. Not pen pacers more of the laid back kind unless in the woods. Their feet do not seem to be sore at all but the nails are split on the bottom side almost all the way to the toe. What is treatment to get them to grow out correctly? Thank You

I don't have a answer for it but I have a hound that is the same way and he is on dirt. If I don't trim his nails regularly the top part will break off leaving the quick exposed then I have to lay him up till it grows back out or it will bleed like crazy when he trees. It takes a long time to grow back out, probably a month to a month and a half.
