Re: Re: Will it make them better?

2) Tree count down this is one of the best rules Ever in the history of UKC to be approved. This will Improve the quality of dogs produced, bred and hunted. I will give you and example why. A Real UKC Hunt: 3 dog cast I will call them dog A,B&C Dogs cut all dogs struck 100yds infront A&B went straight ahead to the right C swung to the left opening. A treed B treed 5 was up walked in scored coon. Pulled off C still opening recut A & B strike again working a track C trees B quits her track and goes to C, tree B go and score tree coon seen. I will shorten it up for You A and C each treed 3 coons that night never together and never in the hunt were all dogs treed at one time. B scored on 6 coons, but never once treed a coon but multiple times quit a track to go to a dog treed. 5 out of 6 times that night she got to a dog treed after 2minutes and sometimes 4minutes won the cast by 50points with 600+ and a 1st place in the hunt. She quit multiple tracks through out the hunt to go to a dog treed. That is lack of desire, heart and ability. Now hypothetically put dog B in that final cast at the UKC World hunt she could have scored on all 6 of those coons and never treed a one of them that would have gave her 450+ not even counting any of her strike points and could have won the world hunt by doing exactly that. Do you really think the best dog would have won or that dog deserved to win a hunt like that?? I will say it is impossible for a dog to go a mile and cover a dog in 2minutes or even 3 for that matter. This would mean a dog would have to run 30mph to do that Impossible. to do it in less then 3 it would need to do 20mph through weeds, corn, beans creeks as a lot of hunts are held in this time of year practically Impossible. The count down might not be as important in areas where only 1 or 2 coon are scored in a hunt. But here in Iowa and Midwest where multiple coons are scored a count down is very much so needed.
g hounds. JMHO [/B][/QUOTE] Everybody is so down on what you call a cover dog. Do you realize if either A or B hadn't been shocked within an inch of their lives for covering either could have won that cast. James Merchant said Merchant's Banjo2 was hard to beat because he got a part of every coon treed. Now a lot of you have trained dogs not to cover. Then a dog comes along and does what dogs have been doing since Adam got Cain and Abel a pair of beagle pups and you think it's wrong. You can hand make your dog but don't be upset when a natural dog beats him.

I'm not sure why people are so against training dogs.

Why should a dog that did nothing but go to a dog treed deserve to get any points?

There is a saying that you hear when someone asked what style dog do you hunt or how does such an such dog operate. They will stay that it will get its own an some of yours to. I like a dog like that. Am hunting a dog like that. In my opinion that’s what you want. But there is a difference in that style dog an one that breaks its neck getting to every dog that opens its mouth. That dog is lazy or doesn’t have the knowledge to do its own thing. In my eyes it’s worthless. Now if that is how you guys consider on how one should operate ,well I feel sorry for you.

These dogs weren't trained not to cover they just hit other tracks before they got to them. Those 6 trees in a 2 hour hunt were within a quarter mile from the truck where they were turned loose. It was excellent dog work. Except for one!!!!!!

Ding ding ding! A dog that comes in after 20 or 30 seconds shouldn't get anything. Also from post above most independent dogs ive owned weren't shocked and trained that way they were born that way.

I don't know how many people hunt a dog that can't tree a coon. I can't imagine anyone feeding a dog like that. I train my pups alone so the first coon they tree is alone, but they also hunt with other dogs. But, I'm old and like the way it used to be.

Because at one time it was a competition. First dog that treed got the most points . But, that's when dogs competed and not hunted on opposite ends of the country.

And even then the prize dog was the one that was first.

The new rules wont stop a dog from backing. It only lets the backers handler decide how much they want on the tree. They got 2 minutes to decide. We need to think about these changes and if they will help before we make them, just to make us feel good.

Every cast is different thats what makes it fun. Under the current rules the best dog that night usually wins. That is what we should all want.
