Beautiful morning for the Michigan opener. Right at break hardly any birds going? Worked one for a little bit but not very hot. About 8:30 I get some birds going and they sound like a group of jakes. Decide to sit down and call in case they have a gobbler with them. They gobble their heads off. Out of the corner of my eye I see a big ol' gobbler coming in! But he stays wide just out of range, struts a while and is gone? I'm thinking what the heck, he was buy himself. Should have come in.

Another decent sounding bird starts gobbling deeper in. I move about 75 yards to give him a clear path to me. I'm yacking and yacking at him on the diaphragm and he's gobbling good but not moving much. Then out of the corner of my eye I see another big bird coming straight to me not saying a word! I pass on him at 40 yards thinking he's going to come all the way. At 25 yards he is starting to think maybe this ain't right. One more time he peaked his head up over a big downed tree between us and it's now or never. End of story.

Nice bird. 11 inch beard, 1 plus inch spurs. Good luck everyone!

Good luck Larry. My brother bow killed his bird last weekend. I just wouldn't like sitting in a blind turkey hunting. I am way to impatient for that. I like to run and gun from one talking bird to the next! lol

Todd,

Most importantly, it allows me to have my coffee!

I would rather run and gun, but the properties I have permission on are a single roughly flat crop field. One is 80 acres and the other 120 acres. The woods are basically along the short end of the field.

Last year, I had my turkey just a little after 7:00 am.

What a strange turkey season! I called hens in nearly every day. One day a hen came into my decoys at 9:00 am, and she stayed until 4:35 pm. I never called a jake or tom in one time all season. They refused to come to calls or near decoys, and they were even gun shy of blinds. The first week of May there was 3 gobblers. Then there was two, and the last 10 days only one. I hated to, but I had to put my bow away.

I broke out my shot gun. This morning I finally sealed the deal! I got a 24 lb. 11" beard 1 1/8" and 1 3/16" spurs. He did a semi circle around me, and then finally made a mistake of hitting the 30 yard mark. I did not waste any time! What a nice bird. I can't believe it took me to the end of season this year. The last two years I have been spoiled arrowing a turkey on the first day of season.

Went to Florida to try my luck on an Osceola, and to New Mexico for a Merriams.
This Osceola x Eastern came off private land just south of Tallahassee.

This Merriams came from public land (Carson National Forest) New Mexico
