If you are comparing Coon/Den to empty trees then yes. 35 years ago there were a few more 90% accurate dogs, probably a half a dozen in every county. 1 or 2 of those 6 might have been fit for the night hunts. Most of those dogs then took a long time to set down and tree. They would check a tree, then check again, then check again each time circling farther out from the tree. If any coon track was in that area, they would choose to run it, rather than tree. But when they treed you took the gun. If it wasn't a den tree, you would be using the gun.
This was back when I first started coon hunting. A winning competition dog back then would miss now and then, have a coon 75% of the time. Dogs packed up more then, so the winner stayed on the first coon up while the track dog trailed on and on. The winner could take the pressure of the rest trailing out of there. He was a stay put tree dog. Winners got bred more over the years.
Well balanced hounds were kinda rare 35 years ago, about the same as today. If "everyone" bred for balance all these years, I wonder if we would have more of them?
