Dan will disagree on part of this. Most show people do not hunt their dogs because of fear of getting killed, lost or getting hurt where they can not show. See a 300 dollar field dog is allot easier to replace then a 1500.00 show dog. Just the facts. I can try out and go through five hunting pups and hope they have what it takes in the field or pay 1000.00 or 1500 and know I can win in the show. Sorry I have owned dogs out of some of the nicest akc and ukc field lines for hunting. I can tell you this. Would rather have something that I know can do something rather then something I hope can. Thanks for reading and good luck.
Gary, in your own words, you are saying you need one line for show and another line for hunt. This is not the standard for breeders like myself. In my opinion, you're taking the easy way out. I don't know why, you refuse to believe you can have hunt and show in one line. Yes, it is a lot harder to find a good hunting dog, than it is to find a good show dog, and even harder to have both. I don't know where you're getting your prices from, but I have had hunting dogs that $5000 wouldn't buy them. I wouldn't give you a nickel, for a dog that won't hunt. I heard the excuses about afraid of losing or dog getting hurt, and that just what they are, excuses ! My dogs mean more to me than most people, but I still hunt them. I don't put a dogs life into a dollar amount. With modern GPS, I don't know how you're gonna lose one and in 20yrs I've never had one killed hunting. UKC has always said they're promoting the total dog, and it's funny to me that AKC wants UKC dogs in their registry now. They're plenty of venues to find what your looking for. UKC as of now, would like to keep their show dogs, hunting dogs and that is why I support UKC. I encourage others to breed for the total dog and not show up to a hunt with 2 different breed of dogs. Taking the hunt requirement will only promote dogs that won't hunt, by your own admission Gary. All the best to you
