The next dog to be highlighted in this weekly column is coming from the English breed, and that is NITECH Woodstock Grizzly. Aside from being a Top 2 sire in the English breed as far as pups produced behind only Rooster, Grizzly also finds himself firmly in the top 5 by number of hunt titled dogs produced. He also comes from that early 90s time period that brought forth hounds that we’ve covered in this column already, including Rooster, Nailor, and Ace. I can tell you, he won’t be the last.

Rooster was part of a 7-pup litter born in December of 1991. The three males and four females in the litter accounted for a lot of hounds that circulated around the English breed. And 3 pups in the litter finished to NITECH with Grizzly, NITECH Bee Ridge Red Hot Molly, and NITECH Speed’s Little Maggie. But today, we are going to talk about Grizzly and what he accomplished as a breeder.

Grizzly’s first litter hit the ground when he was still well under 2. As a matter of fact, he had a handful of gyps bred before his 2nd birthday and actually produced a couple of NITECHs out of 1 of those litters. That was a cross out of Grizzly and NITECH Woodstock Maggie Mae that was born in June of 1993. Those 2 pups were NITECH ‘PR’ Brigmans Woodstock Martha and NITECH ‘PR’ Bright’s Woodstock Joe. He wasn’t overly bred his first few years and had the bulk of his litters from 1997-2000 when he was a little older in life. Luckily, he was still able to produce plenty of good-sized litters.

The next litter I will highlight was born in January of 1996 out of that same NITECH Woodstock Maggie Mae female. This time she had 9 pups with 3 of them titling out, CH NITECH ‘PR’ Woodstock Kodiak, NITECH ‘PR’ Woodstock Hawk, and NITECH ‘PR’ Woodstock Sadie Mae. Looking through Mae’s history I actually found that this cross was made 8 times between 1993-1999 and produced 69 pups with 9 of them achieving a hunt title. Outside of the 5 I have mentioned, there was also GRNITECH ‘PR’ Woodstock Red Bud 75, CH NITECH ‘PR’ Shultz’s Woodstock Ben, NITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Coondog Woodstock Maggie Mae, and CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Sutton’s Woodstock Bear.

In July of 1997 a litter out of Grizzly and NITECH ‘PR’ Robinsons Wendy was born with 10 pups. 4 of those 10 titled out including, NITECH ‘PR’ Robinson’s Sting, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Robinsons Rowdy, CH ‘PR’ Osborne’s Big Bad Grizz, and NITECH ‘PR’ Robinson’s Ghost. Two years later in May of 1999, Grizzly and ‘PR’ Barber’s Little Dot had a litter of 12 pups with 3 titled hounds. Those 3 were NITECH ‘PR’ Heart Breakin Rock, NITECH ‘PR’ Madison’s Little Kacey, and GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Kight’s River Swamp Maggie.

Once again, the ability to collect frozen semen really added to Grizzly’s breeding career. Grizzly had multiple litters a year hit the grounds from early 2000s through 2010. I’d be remiss not to mention a couple of the litters from the frozen semen era. The first of which will be a cross born in April of 2007 out of Grizzly and NITECH ‘PR’ Burnetts Red Hot Red Rose. Out of this 10-pup litter, 5 finished out to at least NITECH including, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Parker’s KY Rocket, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Woodstock Gun, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Roark Wild Joy, NITECH ‘PR’ River Swamp Lucy, and CH NITECH ‘PR’ Shackleford’s Blue Pattie.

In one of his most recent litters, in August of 2008, Grizzly semen was used on NITECH ‘PR’ Burnett’s Red Hot Red Rose again to produce a top reproducer in his own right, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Taylor’s Rasputin HTX. Rose was only bred twice in her lifetime, both to Grizzly semen, and both with outstanding results. Most recently the semen was used again, in June of 2021, on a litter that produced four pups. It will be interesting to see if one of those hounds will be the next to carry on Grizzly’s legacy.
