Everything besides walkers are dissapearing into thin air ?

From what I can tell no one is much messing with anything besides walkers anymore it seems all other dog breeds are almost dissapearing into thin air , I mean there is good and bads in all breeds I Beleive we need to make a stand for other breeds of hounds and give credit for what they do

.

After reading your post it would be interesting in see the numbers of hounds registered every year by breed.

In your last statement you talk about making a stand for other breeds. The only person that can make a stand is the ones breeding them.

I really think some of the other breeds are not doing as bad as it may seem. You have the core breeders in every breed. Then you have those just waiting on the bandwagon when something winning and reproducing comes along. Really nothing wrong with getting on the wagon if that is the breed you like. I think Big Country is an example of that as he has added some excitement and recognition to the blue tick breed.
Haven't mentioned promotion. Easy to promote a winner and that promotion adds life to a breed.

I think if you'll read the TOC qualifier's list you'll see that "other breeds" aren't disappearing. Sure, there may not be as many of any particular breed as Walkers, but the TW has always had the upper hand when it came to entry numbers. I've got nothing against Walkers, I've got a nice one myself and I'm a member of the TWBFA, but the idea that people aren't hunting other breeds of just isn't accurate at all. There are many fine, dedicated houndsmen and women who prefer the other breeds and who are promoting them in competition hunts.

I honestly think I would rather hunt a blue tick or B&T but a good pup or started dog seems harder to find. At this time I hunt 2 walkers that I like a lot but sill have the urge to have another breed in the kennel. But last spring I bought a really well bred B&T pup and a really well bred Walker pup. Raised them together and sold the B&T pup at about 5 months old. Nothing wrong with him but just liked what I was seeing in the Walker better. The fellow that bought the B&T says he is doing real well and the Walker pup is I believe the best pup I"ve ever had. Both are 11 months old. Why did I keep the Walker? Don't really know.

You are right, if it is only "all about winning" get a walker. But there are some other things that some people consider. Such as the enjoyment or pleasure of hunting. There is also the personal satisfaction of winning with an underdog. Some people also enjoy a challenge and the thrill you get when you overcome it.

Last time I heard about numbers there were more t&w pups registered each year than all other coonhound breeds combined. I like b&ts best but I've also had at least one of every breed except leopard hound. There is good and bad in all breeds but all of my best dogs were b&t.

I’ve got a 12 year old English that we won almost 170 cast with. I’ve spent over $50,000 dollars on Walker dogs in the last 4 years trying to find one like her. Been unsuccessful.

I’m in middle Tennessee and walkers was king in early 2000’s but in recent years I have seen more other breeds. I personally liked a walker dog when I was younger they typically have grit and was punchy and drove tracks like no no other breed. I personally think we had inferior breeding and we have watered this blood down because people are breeding the wrong stuff. I am not a breeder but my grandfather was. He could cross hounds to keep the good and eliminate the bad. I have hunted or owned everything but a Leopard hound. I currently hunt a redbone and he is as fine as any walker hound or English that’s been in my country. I love an English dog but I’m personally trying to understand all breeds to make myself a more rounded handler. My loves go 1. Walker close 2. English 3. All the rest. English hounds are starting to show some of the traits I loved in walkers in my early years. I just hope we don’t water this blood down with a bunch of negatives. If your a breeder talk to the older breeders. Don’t breed to paperwork breed to hounds ability. If the dog your breeding can’t tree coons solo consist DONT BREED THEM! If they’re idiots don’t do it.

Breeds don't matter in competition. The judge that lets you plus the spider eyes is what counts

No, having coon eyes looking down is what will make you consistent.

And some of us wonder why anybody tolerates a dog that is less than 90% accurate.

That's a reflection of my comment. Some people want to crap on what I'm saying but it's happening everywhere. There are nite champs and grnitech made every weekend on water droplets, spider eyes and those coons that will only look when their handler is looking but no one else seems to see them, but they get the plus points anyway.

Interesting replies!

Somehow the wheels came off and accuracy became the talking point. 😂

Good, mediocre, and bad in all breeds. Regardless of breed, enjoy those hunts with those good ones! Even those mediocre ones can make a person smile now and again 😉

Not the case in my area. I think we have as many bluetick hunters as Walker hunters. It's rare to see a black and tan or redbone and rarer to see a Plott.

I got one better than 90% if you want to come to Tennessee and see him go. He is a redbone too. Lol.
