Our Dept of Conservation is ran by a board not the state legislature so they can't get their greedy little paws on the $'s it brings in. A couple of years ago it was on the state ballot to change that but luckily it failed. Missouri has either the largest or second largest budget in the nation we have had a .0 something % portion of sales tax for decades and it is untouchable for any use except the Conservation Dept. Like any entity they do have to follow state and federal laws. But I can assure you they have worked hard at the re-introduction of past species either through land management or turning them loose in specific areas. The latest is elk mostly brought in from Kentucky. Look at the booming bear population in Arkansas they were turned loose back in I think it was the 30's brought from the north Minnesota and I think Canada. So yes there are many success stories. As far as the rattlesnakes go I saw the signs with my own eyes that they were going to be placing on a couple of dens near here to re-introduce them here in this area.

That might be true, placing them near established den sites would give them a chance to survive. One has to ask the question as to where they would get the snakes to restock? It's one thing to want to do something, but another to actually do it. Timber rattlesnakes are threatened or endangered In most states, that's why they are protected. Where would the snakes be procured for restocking? That's a million dollar question and one that does not have a feasable answer. I personally do not like venomous snakes, but they have their place in the ecosystem. Studies have shown that relocation of timber rattlesnakes does not work very well and the mortality rate is very high. I just do not believe every story I hear about various states stocking timber rattlesnakes, now that does not mean that some states have not tried on a limited basis. Dave

We've been taking the snakes place ever since the first house was built. I'm thankful the saber tooth tiger is extinct, otherwise the DNR would be protecting them too.

I wonder where they got the info for the "relocation study"? Snakes have their place all right and surely you don't need me to tell you where that is.

Mr. Lambert

I know where they aren't going to be if I see them on my place, I can tolerate them in the mountains as I don't hunt until after they den up for winter. Lol. Dave
