Rickets (Help)

Got a pup with rickets had him to vet and been on calcium up pill for a couple weeks. One day he looks almost normal then a day or 2 later looks bad again. Fixing to switch to large breed pup food. Any suggestions on which brand people have had success get pup over rickets with? What about cod oil, vitamin D pill or calcium?

Hills Science Diet, Calcium pill 2X day, and cod liver oil fixed mine. Getting some sunlight sure does not hurt anything.

Cut back on feeding and use lower protein feed and use cod liver oil every day.
Usually the cause is their body growing faster than their bones and ligaments. Cutting feed amounts and lower protein feed will almost always fix this. Cod liver oil will help.

Cheap food, adult dog food or large breed formula is a must for coonhounds in my opinion. They need time to grow a strong skeleton before packing on weight. The other things than can help are lots of sunshine and lots of vigorous exercise.

Give him cod oil it will work. I feed purina puppy chow and have never had rickets feeding that

Rickets

Calcium should be 1.2%, Phosphorus 1.0 % for puppies. Most dog feeds are Ca 1.0% and Phos .8% this is too low for fast growing pups. Cut the amount of feed as most pups with rickets are too fat and eating too high a fat diet.
All sources of calcium do not have the same digestibility.

Rickets

I thought I had a problem with rickets went to the vet. The doc says most all foods today will prevent rickets. I was giving cod liver oil vitamins, he said I was making it worse problem was they were growing too fast used a large breed puppy food cut out on cod liver and vitamins straightened out okay. Got a pup from Barry Kiddy he told me a lot of people were having problems with these pup foods and high proteins feed them a cheap food keeps their bone straight.
