Well it's finally arrived. The 2013 Oklahoma furbearer season kicks off tonight at midnight. I plan to be casting my dogs at the stroke of twelve with rifle in hand. This season is my first in many years where I have a young dog that needs some coon down to him in preparation for the spring hunts.

I am stoked about this upcoming season and wondering if any other hunters are planning to be in hot pursuit of old ricky at midnight tonight?

I would love to still do that,but there are deer hunters everywhere I hunt now so I'll just wait til Sunday night so I can get in and be gone by midnight so I don't cause any hard feelings.Good luck to you,tho.

I'm hunting Federal land. The only deer hunting allowed in there was archery and it closed November 22. They have a special antlerless rifle hunt coming up On December 4th & 5th and coon hunting is closed on those two days.

The only hunters I have to worry about are waterfowl hunters. They can hunt there from December 1 to the end of duck season.

Most of the area is pretty rough and not for the faint of heart, but is a good alternative to get away from all the deer hunters.

We went last night, Freddie, treed one on the outside, one in a split den that we saw, three good dens and a blank. I was surprised that they headed to the den so quick this early in the season. Maybe I need more dog power, Tom.

That Federal land is some rough hunting! We couldn't seem to get after any decent tracks last night and wound up treeing one slick tree, a den and two singles we knocked down to the young dog. The fog rolled in about 2:30 and we pulled into the driveway at 4AM.

The old dog was a little sore today, so I gave him a day of rest. Will run them again tomorrow night.

Back to the terrain. The den tree we treed last night was 120 yards into the timber according to the Garmin, but it took us thirty minutes to get there. We had to crawl through some big greenbriar patches. I told my oldest boy that if we hunted this land for forty-five days, our dogs would be more than ready for the spring hunts.
