Summer time whelping tips please.

My gyp is getting ready to have a litter of pups in a couple of weeks. Any tips on summertime whelping. This litter is the first for the both of us. Inside is not an option, and I do not have a garage. Any advice will be appreciated.

thanks,

Scott

Hey man I built a brood box to keep them off the ground and ran a cord out to a small fan this kept them cool and keeps the flies off them too... also used a expanded metal floor so later the mess falls to the ground... makes for much cleaner pups! GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the reply. I have electricity out there and plan on running a box fan under the lean-to and then another little fan in the whelping box. I have read on some post that some use frozen water bottles as well.....

freeze milk/soda jugs to put in the box with them. that is what we did when we had pups in july, it worked out well. if they got hot they got around it and licked the condinsation off and when they got cooled off they moved away from it.

summertime whelping

Please don't put a fan directly ON the puppies and the mother. As newborns, they can chill very quickly. They need to be warm at all times as newborns. Once their eyes are open at around two weeks of age and they can maintain their own body temperature, you have other options for cooling.

Can you move your dog's kennel or pen to a shaded area while she has newborns?

They will be in the shade. The back of the kennel has a lean-to that is shaded. I will set it up so there will be air movement and not direct air blowing on the puppies.

thanks

Scott
