? About coonhunters

eGI don’t want to derail Tyler’s thread about what it’s worth to hunt a coonhound. Compared to other dog hunting disciplines like bird dogs coonhunters are cheap . They will spend $30,000 + on a trick. $300 on a light $750 on a tracking system but the most important part they want someone to hunt there dog for $300 a month. It was said on the other thread that can’t hunt one and get enough to make a profit. A person can’t hunt there own dog for $30O a month so why should someone else. If someone actuall y knows how to hunt one right $750 a month is a deal.

You're not jacking my thread! I agree with you. Bird dog guys can basically charge whatever they want... Coon hunting must be a poor mans sport.

I agree, if you are a trainer/coon hunter $750 is a fair price, but I will say this if it cost me $300 a month to hunt One of my own I would quit!

It's like anything else, if you prove you are worth more, you will get more. There aren't just a whole bunch of paid trainers out there in this sport that have been at it for the multiple years that it takes to build a business reputation.

I kept detailed records for years, I had a truck, atv and boat that I used only for hunting. I put all my expenses on 1 credit card and after gas, vehicle maintenance, feed, bedding, vet care, registration, lodging on overnight trips, supplies(1 new pair of boots & repairing 1 collar) I divided by nights hunting and it was $22.18 a night..

That is before making any money... so $30 a night would be cheap in reality! Obviously no one is willing to pay that but that's the facts...

That was 2012. I hunted 4 nights a week on average that year, but everything is higher now. Unless you feed a dog scraps, keep it on chain in a homemade dog house with straw bedding and never take it to the vet, never have any equipment failures or lose anything and are able to cut lose from your backyard to hunt you're gonna spend over $300 a month to properly care for and hunt a coonhound..

I mean no disrespect But if you have culled better dogs than most people are hunting Why would you take a mans money to hunt a dog when you couldn’t fix the ones you culled?

Nitehuntwr2004 I wish I could hunt for $300 a month. I have got some hunting within 15-20 miles but it’s smaller sections and for the most part they are cut once and then move. On the other hand I can drive ahiut 50 miles and hunt and hunt until daylight and places where I can recur off trees multiple times. I’ll average 125-130 miles a night. If I’m going to push one hard and counting entry fees and such I’ll spend well over $1500 a month.

Not all dogs have what it takes to be at my standards of keeping around. All of them I've sold has went on to do big things but they had one thing or another I didn't like so they went down the road. I made the UKC top 100 with an 18 month old pup... he had a few mental quirks so down the road he went. I'm a dog hunter/trainer not a miracle worker

I understand, sending one down the road is different from culling.

I don't believe Tyler ever said he was a Pro but a hard hunter he is with the land to hunt one right. As for sending them down the road many that have been sent down the road here have been the next guys once in a lifetime dog. What suits one to a tee may not someone else and there is something for everyone one out there. Dogs of all sorts of hunting styles, colors, different mouths and then there is the male or female. Tyler has a young female that he really likes and enjoys working young dogs. He also has the benefit of a picking a different pup about anytime he chooses and Cheyenne for a mentor anytime he has something come up he needs help with.

Everybody keeps comparing coonhounds to bird dogs. Doesn't the bird dog sport have an economic input (wealthy folks that hunt two weeks a year)? Coonhounds or hounds in general have no real economic input. It is all a game swapping money amongst ourselves. Until the sport finds a way to create an economic input the sport is going to continue to die.

You guys are the future of our sport and I am glad to see the desire to make our sport better. Johnny, the truth is most coonhunters are just working class guys trying to support a family. Most can not afford what it would actually cost to buy a top coonhunt, so they try and train one, or get someone else to train it for them. My hunting buddy has trained and sold some very good coon dogs for what would be considered a high price. However, if one figured the amount if time and expense it took to get the dog trained he did not make anything, he lost money. He did enjoy seeing the fruits if his labor pay off and that was his profit. Hunting dogs is DEFINITELY a money loosing endeavor, one better like what they are doing , you Are NOT going to make money. Lol. Dave

Coon hunters

Hunting like every other sport is just as expensive as one makes it! We can spend as much money as we have to spend or just what it takes to get by. Some want the best lights trucks, dog boxes, etc, as they can afford, others make do with what they can get. My hunting buddy has a truck that he has put over 3 hundred thousand miles on, mostly coon hunting and seems to be satisfied with keeping his old truck, but his dog is one of the best I have seen. He is more concerned with his dog than new equipment , but he has hundreds of hours invested in this dog. He would be loosing money at any sane price he could get out of this dog. If you take the pleasure factor out of anything, it becomes a job. Dave

If you take the peace of mind out of it, its more troublesome than its not. I've been stuck many times on them average hunting trucks trying to get closer to dog treed. Just left the truck and went to dog. The dog was worth way more. Good hunting

Rooster sprouse one of my hunting buddy's asked me a while back how come you don't compete like you used to ? I told him well when you get retired and you only get paid once a month someday you will see. He told me last night after he is retired a month ago he understands lol. But I have always raised my own dogs and I don't sell dogs as many freinds as I have by time I give them all a pup it takes a big litter but in turn if I get where I need one they return the favor the two I got are sleeping in the doghouse they were born in.

Hunters

I am sure thankful for all the hunters that actually train dogs, I don't have the patience or desire to train one myself. I have always bought trained dogs, as I enjoy the hunting more than the training aspect. Saying that, we would be hurting if no one trained and sold trained dogs. I don't build trucks, but I enjoy driving them. Lol. Dave
