Lets get back to talking about hunting Janey pups. Its been 6 or 7 weeks since Moja has been in the woods due to this year's harsh winter. All the hair she beat off herself from hunting last fall and bloody scabs on her face from brush whipping had healed so we were good to go.

Tonight it warmed up a little and we headed for the Turtle Mtn swamps. This time of year the frost is already 3-4 feet in the ground and with the swamps froze over one can walk the ice to get around if snow is not too deep.



When we finally arrived at the woods, I cut Moja into the swamp alone and she was gone, gone, gone in the blink of an eye. A few minutes later she opened real nice and loud about 500 yards away while working her track back toward me.

She struggled a little in the deep snow and ice and came up short on one of those trees coons use for gymnastics. She thought she had it but no, so I told her so and gave her a little push off the tree. She dropped to the ground and spun out of there on the run. She trailed about 100 feet and sat down under the coon.


We left the coon, and I walked her about 50 feet off the tree and fired her across nothing but the snow and ice of the open swamp. She soon found a spot with open, flowing water below a beaver dam and struck a track she trailed far off. This track didn't produce anything she liked and she came back to the open water, crossed it and treed on the other side.

I walked over to her and found her treed and ready to take out a coon hanging in a small willow.



And take it out she did! This coon didn't get left in the tree, no sir.


Wow. Moja is a nonstop blast to hunt, and she can do it with style in tough conditions when only the coondogs go to the woods. Keep up the good work making more good ones.

Thanks for the updates Rick, nice pics also. Moja has a mouth that you could pick out if u cut 50 dogs loose, and louder than most males. She's only 2, it's good to see her get it figured out all by herself. Good crosses and good breeding are only part of the equation, it's takes guys like you to give these pups the chance and to keep them in the timber. Even world beaters cant tree coon sittin in the kennel. We are glad you have her Rick, and glad you're liking her. That's exactly what we're after. We would be glad to put more pups in your hands down the road.
