California coon club

Are there any coon hunting clubs in California? Just moved here from a three year tour in Japan.

I know there are some up there (North, your direction...), so if you find anything out/know of any upcoming events, let me know I'm way South, but I'd be willing to travel to get my dog some more points...

Yes. We will probably start back up with events around Feb, 2014. We hold all 4 events - Show, Hunt, Field Trial and Water Race. Also probably have some PKC events as well. We always need help and more participation.

As far as I know, not really. United Houndsmen pretty much folded. I guess the Central CA Sporting Dog Assoc (Turlock chapter) payed the lease/ins on the pond, and they hold water races there. But I haven't spoken to anyone about UKC events. I think the President of that club, Zach Couch has UKC Walkers. Might be able to get them to do something next year. What else are we bear hunters to do? (Besides move asap)

I no this thread isnt about this but i was just curious what the hunting
in California was like? Seems like the landscape changes dramatically
from north to south. Thanks chris.

Some of us have talked about maybe starting a UKC club up again, but seems the coon population is pretty poor right now after all the rain this past winter.
The open field trials and water races are still going as usual though here in NorCal.

Biggest changes are actually from east to west. Once you get into the mountains, it's tough going for any kind of hunting without a horse, mule, or ATV. I've spent a lot of time in the Los Padres National Forest, and there is no way I'd cut a dog loose in there. There aren't that many coon in that forest, but there are a lot of mountain lion and black bear. Neither of which you can hunt without a special permit. Nobody talks about that out here except the ranchers.
That mountain range that runs up and down the state is a beast. You can get mountains that go up to around 14,000 feet just east of Yosemite. I haven't been up north much but I'd say hunting in the pine trees might be the easiest mountain hunting out here. Thickest coon populations are in residential areas and there are so many highways out here it's hard to find safe places to hunt. I'd say the flat land out there near the dairy farms might have some patches with plenty of coon and the foothill areas would be good hunting too if you can avoid the roads.
