Positive Move for UKC.

I cut my teeth on UKC hunts and UKC registration papers many years ago. UKC was the backbone of our registered dogs.
I think for about a generation now. Many have grown away from UKC. The younger people saw the lure of money in other hunts. They like getting their pictures taken and seeing their dogs in state and national standings. Many of the youth hunting today. Don't understand UKC degrees and surly don't put the value in them that us old timers did.

Well I think the changes UKC has made and the addition of their large purse hunt. Will change things. It will get young people reading about what is going on. It will get people understanding more about UKC degrees and how to win them. It will get a generation lost, interested again.

Yes there are bugs to be worked out and a learning curve. But they will be worked out as UKC planted a seed that will grow. The younger generation will read and learn and figure out how to play the game with a UKC scorecard in their hand. The older generation might get lost in the shuffle. But the future is the Youth. The older folks can help them or get out of the way.

I think that I will just get out of the way. I have gotten too old for these 2 hr endurance runs. I will have to just sit on the sidelines and watch.

POOR SITUATION????????????????

I don't get why a poor situation at all. They are trying to get more hunters. The current situation is without these rule changes it would be just a few years and UKC would be no longer. Only thing ill say is there's going to be more younger guys attending hunts. Is it a hard pill to swallow for the older die hard old school ukc guys? Most likely yes. But the old format and old set of rules were that OLD. They needed changed and revamped for many years.

Tarbaby, endurance runs aren't any fun. Revamping or tweaking the old rules is one thing but this is a whole new set of rules. That's right, change the Rules for the young guys and just run the old guys off. Don't expect the young guys to learn to hunt by the old rules. That is the way our whole society is today. Just look at AOC.

Mr Richard you are old school. I really do respect that. You put a cast of dogs in thin coon I can see your point on the endurance run. But am telling you if you turn a cast out in thick coon an get ole red to treeing them suckers an yes train him to fit these rules walking want be as bad as you think.I say old school because you older guys are stuck in your ways. I respect that. By the way there is nothing anybody can do about the thin coon part.

.

The positive facts is see are about future hunters. In this area and I can only speak for this area. I know several young people that enjoy the sport. Some have won thousands is another brand of hunts many have tried to win thousands and enjoyed trying. When I try to talk to them about UKC it is like I am speaking a foreign language. They see no value in a UKC degree or attending a UKC hunt.

I hope the changes and the new larger hunt in the future will change that.

I will admit I am shocked at the amount of rule changes. For years it seemed like no changes were possible. This years for some reason they made many.

As far as old timers headed for the side lines. We are headed that way no matter what the rules are. Might as well get there sooner than later.

New Hunters

As a young hunter I have made one dog ntch and didn’t see any point going further than that. With these new changes and the five cast wins to qualify for the big hunt I will be at the local clubs trying to get those five wins. I will probably just try and grand my dog out now while I’m at it too.

One time I tried to improve the pay structure for the employees at a place I managed. It truly helped the loyal employees who were there every day no matter what but it took that money from the employees that were working the system to work less days. I thought I would get opposition from the ones who were working the system but I got more opposition from the loyal employees who the change was going to benefit the most. It taught me that people just don't like change or they are afraid of it because they fear the worst.

With UKC if changes in the rules and programs weren't made it is obvious the clear path that they are on with competition coon hunts. They can also see where the competition is besting them and how they can get some of those hunters back from them, or maybe even from them as they weren't with UKC to begin with.

We are still going to be turning our dog loose with 2 or 3 other dogs who don't know the rules so in the short term not much is going to change in the dogs actions when we turn them loose, we are just going to score them different than we have been in UKC. I just keep thinking about how much I'd like to have my old female back from the 80's who would tree all of those close and alone coon on the way to dogs when we were pleasure hunting. These new rules would be ideal for her.

Mr Smith I was thinking the same thing last night. My old dog will be 8 in October. What I would give to have him back at 2 or 3 years old. Done good with him in the chkc hunts. He fit the rules. As long as ukc doesn’t stray from the have to have plus points everything will be great. I really see this as an opportunity for the older guys that know how to train a dog. Not saying the young guys don’t. A man that knows how to train an does his part pleasure hunting will do good.

this really is a step in the right direction. I know that I will now go to a few UKC hunts next year just to get the 5 wins. Otherwise I wouldn't take an old to any UKC hunt. The rule changes are fine too. I really like a few of them, don't really care about most. The rules are the rules.

I really like no leash lock and squalling right away. Gives the dog the best chance to compete.

Good job UKC of listening to hunters!

Changing things up to bring in young people worked great for country music why wouldn't it work for coon hunting.

It worked great for the business, but what did it do to the music? Have you listened to the new "country" music?

As little as possible but, the people making the money don't care if we don't like it.
