Venomous snakes

It's mid summer now and close to snake breeding and birthing of young snakes. Just wondering if you summer hunters are running into many snakes or getting their dogs bit. Late August early September is a bad time for venomous snakes due to mating season and the gravity females giving birth. Dave

There about as rare as hens teeth here in Northern New England Dave. There is a spot in Rumney, NH and one in Rutland, VT that hosts a small population of Timber Rattlers.

I remember back 50 plus years ago when in grade school a classmate brought in the rattle from one his father killed while logging. Had it in a baby food jar and it was maybe an inch long. They are protected by law in both states.

That's my kind of country, no snakes especially venomous snakes. I wish that we did not have any in my country, but we do. That being said I used to hunt year around and NEVER seen a snake at night or never got a dog snake bit. Several of my hunting buddies did get dogs bit, guess I was just lucky. Dave

Dave about three years ago I bought a dog and on the way home we made a turnout. He was treed and just quit. When I got there he was staggering. Got him to the truck and went and got some Benadryl to give him. He'd been bitten three times. He recovered fine but I thought he was gonna die and I hadn't owned him 2 hours. They were in a little slew so I'm sure it was a nest of cottonmouths. The other dog that was with him was also bitten but didn't get near as sick.

In 50 years of hunting dogs living in Ga and Tn ive only had one dog bit and didnt see it happen but what it had to be.He was a mt curr treeing a coon and when i shot out the coon he limped over to it and stood over it looking at it.I knew that was weird because he loved the fur.I looked him over and leashed him up .Half way to the truck he could barely walk and his leg was swelling.when i got to the truck he was really swelled up.The next morning his leg and shoulder were swelled up bad.I found one obvious hole like a bite in the leg.He layed in his doghouse for two days.I was told to give him benadryl and pennicillen. The third day he came out and ate.Got better quickly after that.It made me think more about snakes but i still hunt in the summer some.Ive never seen one while hunting. Not alot of em where i live but there are some.

Dave, being of a certain age you might enjoy this. A young man that lives across the road from one of my hunting spots asked if he could tag along. He asked if dogs got snake bitten often. I told him I hadn't seen snake in 5 years. My dog treed about 300 yards in and we went o have a look. I had a $350 light and he had a $15 light held on with an elastic strap. We're walking to the tree through a small swamp and he says there's a snake on your right. A minute later he says there's another one on your right. A little farther he says there's one on your left. He only found one coming out. So I'm not the one to ask about seeing snakes.

No Sir. I don't know him, I live in East Tennessee near the Virginia border. My wife like a to show Saddlebreds, so we have some of both breeds. I do like the rocky mountains horses they are naturally baited and one smooth ride. Dave

Donald, I hear what you are saying about seeing snakes, it's no telling how many I have passed without seeing. Never seen the snake, but one struck me on my boot one night while trying to shine a tree. There was a fallen tree close to the tree the dog wad street in and I was walking out the fallen tree when the snake struck. I thought I got hit with a bat it struck so hard. I jumped off the fallen tree just knowing that I was bit, lucky for me the pants and boot keep the fangs from reaching skin. I was in rattlesnake country and even though I never seen the snake, I knew what had hit me. Lol. Dave

My first Coondog got bit the first time I took him hunting. Right on the snout. Smaller Copperhead. Gave him some Benadryl and he made it alright. Swole up like a softball. NW Arkansas around White Rock Mountain.

I live in southern Oklahoma almost on the Texas border. We have rattlesnakes, cottonmouth, and a few copperhead snakes. I get at least one cottonmouth bit every year. Usually just swells them up for about 3 days.

How about a rattlesnake bite, always thought they would kill a dog if not given antivenom.

That's what I have always heard as well. I do know a couple of hunters that got a dog bit from a timber rattlesnake, but survived with vet treatment of anti venom. In both cases the dogs went down after they got bit and had to be carried out of the woods. Dave

I’ve never had one bit by a rattlesnake that I know of. It probably would depend on where they were bit and how much venom they got.

Yes Sir. You are right it would depend on where and how much venom was injected. I do not envy you hunting in rattlesnake country, I would be s nervous wreck. Lol. Dave

Yes Sir. Me too, no way I could hunt seeing multiply rattlesnake every time I went hunting. Oklahoma and Texas hunters just get used to seeing lots of snakes, definitely not me. Lol. Dave

Snakes

Saw a picture on another web site of a timber rattlesnake a man killed and she had 18 baby snakes inside ready to give birth. Rattlesnakes and Copperheads give live birth in August and Early September, they also, mate during this time August and September. Folks be extra careful now through September. Dave

1 Copperhead on the lane and 10 in the yard all permanently relocated so far this summer. No dogs bitten at home or hunting this year 🤞. Thankfully we've never seen a rattlesnake or I'd be moving. They have them not to far on into Oklahoma South and South of us in Missouri and even a few of the little side winders in Kansas. We keep dex on hand just in case for copperhead bites. I really worry more about the grandkids or myself than the dogs! We check around the kids play area and anytime they go outside.

I was thinking about you and those Copperheads. You usually see quiet a lot of them in your yard every year. You definitely must have a den nearby. Copperheads are the hardest snakes to spot in leaves as they blend right in. I sure hope that you or the grandkids don't get bit by one. Dave
