And right this minute my dad has a sheltie and a cavalier king Charles spaniel and for those that don't know that's a very expensive lap dog. He is up in age so he turns them loose sits on his back porch and waits on them to get treed and he may or may not shoot one out to them. And gets mad when they split tree. Genetics well I guess not. The Sheltie is obsessed with a squirrel and the cavalier just jealous that she was getting attention so she figured I better do the same. Now do I suggest people breed to a cavalier to get squirrel dogs I think not. But he spends alot of time with them and they figured out that's what he wanted.

Back when I started we bred the dogs that put the most hides on the barn winning hunts was like it is now sometimes the best dog did not win but boy was it fun back then and inexpensive.

We were living in a blessed time and did not know it.

Things are different now a days I know this. People are lazy we hunted our dogs back then. I think the dogs now are better you just don't run fast game now of days. Now of days they say oh that's a deer dog cause it ran one off 500 yards. They don't know what a deer dog is. I remember trying to get them back after 3 days and hearing them run every night. Now that's a deer dog it might take 5 years to get them broke off them

I probably need to rephrase that people may not be lazier they just got more stuff going on. Hunting was my entertainment and dogs are all I studied just didn't have all the stuff they got now and all us kids hunted back then. My niece came over Christmas and showed me how to work this phone now look at me I'm on the interweb . My excuse is it's raining and I can voice my opinion .

I too hunted every chance I had as a kid...most every dog I ever had in those days were mutts and they sure enough were hunting dogs...caught lots of game including deer I shot with a 22...I stayed in trouble because all my free time I was hunting my dogs...

If I had to go live in the wild and I had a choice of a gun with a case of shells or 3 or 4 mutts I would choose the mutts because we would catch something to eat every day...no doubt
